RE: Aspen Area Community Plan Update - P8~Z Review
REQUEST OF P&Zs: There is no formal action requested at this time. The purpose of this
meeting is to review the first draft of the Community Vision for the Aspen Area with the P&Zs.
This is a joint meeting with the City and County Planning and Zoning Commissions.
BACKGROUND: The public process for the update to the Aspen Area Community Plan began
in September of 2008. A great deal of information has been generated and provided to the
P&Zs, the Board of County Commissioners and City Council since that time, including:
• State of the Aspen Area: 2000 - 2008
• The Aspen Economy white paper
• City of Aspen Housing Survey
• Small Group meeting synthesis
• Community Survey Results
• Large Group meeting keypad results
All of this information is also available on our website, www.aspencommunityvision.com.
DISCUSSION: A binder with a copy of the first draft of the Community Vision for the Aspen
Area was provided to P&Z members, the Board of County Commissioners and the City Council
on February 19th. This binder also includes a copy of the Community Survey Results and the
results from the Community Vision keypad meetings. There are a total of 10 chapters in the
Community Vision for the Aspen Area:
a - '
• Parks, Recreation, Open Space & Aspen Airport Business Center
Trails (AABC)
• Housing Planning for the Lifelong Aspenite
• Economy Sustaining the Aspen Idea
• Managing Growth Historic Preservation
• Transportation Environmental Quality
The Community Vision for the Aspen Area is divided into two sections. The first, which is
stapled in your binders, is called the Executive Summary. It includes an introduction to the plan,
a discussion on how to read the plan, and an overview of the public process. This section also
includes all of the Vision Statements, Policy Themes and Interrelationships for each chapter.
This section is intended to be a quick reference guide for those reading the Community Vision.
For those who are interested in more detail, there is a second section, called the Community
Vision for the Aspen Area. There is an introduction for this section, and each the 10 chapters
includes an introduction, background information, community comments that were gathered as
part of the public process, vision statements, policy themes, and interrelationships.
