HomeMy WebLinkAboutresolution.council.097-09RESOLUTION #97 SERIES OF 2009 A RESOLUTION OF THE ASPEN CITY COUNCIL, CITY OF ASPEN, COLORADO, ESTABLISHING THE CITY AS AN ADVOCATE FOR PEACE IN DARFUR WHEREAS, the City of Aspen, Colorado, acts as a role model of leadership to other towns and cities in the United States on issues of humanitarian importance; and WHEREAS, the federal government of the United States of America has labeled the ongoing atrocities occurring in Darfur, Sudan, as a genocide and has taken little meaningful action to stop this genocide; and WHEREAS, between 200,000 and 400,000 people have died in conflict with 2.5 million people displaced from actions of violence being perpetuated by the government of Sudan and state-sponsored militias; and WHEREAS, the United States has signed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and acceded the United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, both of which prohibit the United States from allowing such atrocities to occur; and WHEREAS, the International Criminal Court has pressed charges against Omar Hassan al-Bashir, the president of Sudan, for genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes in Darfur; and WHEREAS, the international community, specifically the United Nations and the African Union, needs support in its ongoing efforts to bring about the end to this conflict; and WHEREAS, genocide has historically been ignored when towns and cities fail to give their politicians incentives to act or consequences for not acting on issues of genocide in a timely manner, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ASPEN, COLORADO THAT: The City of Aspen supports all efforts made by the federal government of the United States to facilitate peace in Darfur, including supporting the United Nations, supporting the African Union, and providing protection and humanitarian aid to refugees of this conflict.
