HomeMy WebLinkAboutcoa.cclc.min.011911 COMMERCIAL CORE & LODGING COMMISSION MINUTES OF JANUARY 19, 2011 Vice -chair Mark Godman called the meeting to order at 8:30 a.m. Terry Butler was seated at 8:36 a.m. Commissioners in attendance were: Bill Dinsmoor, Andrew Kole, Mark Goodman, Fred Ayarza, and Don Sheeley. John Starr and Mark Zitelli were excused. Staff: Kathy Strickland, Chief Deputy Clerk 12 days of Aspen Nancy Lesley, Special Events said Mrs. Clause, the reindeer and Santa were very popular. We hope we were a good interim manager. 600 ornaments were ordered and we have five left. The ACRA format was a good formula to follow. Fred asked what we can do better. Don asked what additional events could be added. Nancy said the 12 days is tough to fill. Tammy Barr and the kid's tunes came in after the holidays. Andrew said we think there should be a retail component and we asked for $10,000 for the mining funds. Nancy said the challenger is after the 24 of December. Andrew said it is the busiest week in town and people shop. We would work with the ACRA next year to incorporate the retail component. Terry said the town was quiet on XMAS day. Nancy said on XMAS people are doing their traditions. Andrew said on XMAS eve and day you should end at 3:00. Retailers the day after XMAS offer good sales. We would need to coordinate the stores. Don said the ACRA is taking it over next year. Mark asked how many tourists participated vs. locals. Nancy said we don't have a handle on that number. 1 COMMERCIAL CORE & LODGING COMMISSION MINUTES OF JANUARY 19, 2011 Andrew said before the 21' he noticed a lot of locals in town. Terry asked if it was a more success this year. Nancy said people got used to the event this year. Fred said adding the fire station was terrific. Andrew said Jane Gotleib was great with her performances. Andrew said it would be nice if the Wheeler had something for families. There were three or four hundred people walking around. Mark said Bill mentioned he would like to see more correlation to the song itself. Nancy said we spent $14,700. Quizno pro bike race Nancy she and Derek Gunshor are the co- chairs for the event. It is a premier bike race that starts in Colorado Springs and ends in Denver. The event goes from Colo. Springs, Saluda, Mt. Crested Butte, Gunnison, Independence Pass and finishes in Aspen. They are over night in Aspen. Then they drive to Vail. Derek said they have cars that follow them and they have team RV's following the teams also. Nancy said this will look like the tour de France. Derek said they are planning national live TV every day of the race and it will be on a cable network. Race starts in Gunnison. Nancy said the last day is long and the racers will be tired. Derek said it is a 7 day race and 125 participants with three teams. Don said we are spending $250,000 and we are anticipating that the fans will come to Aspen. 2 COMMERCIAL CORE & LODGING COMMISSION MINUTES OF JANUARY 19, 2011 Fred said he would prefer that they stay here over night. Nancy said this will be the largest single day every in Aspen. Derek said he thinks people will stay in town. August 24 is the day they will be here in Aspen. It starts Monday the 22nd. Derek said the time trial is 8 miles long. They roll into town with their caravan and do the infill structure and Aspen is the host. We will need 300 to 400 volunteers. When the race was announced Mick called the Ski. Co. to help get the bid together. As we went through the bidding process and running the estimates we have worked hand in hand with the city to see how things shake out. Event manager and event organizer would be hired and we split the organization and the city hired the Ski Co. to help organize it. It works for the Ski Company because it is late August. When we looked at lodging Bill Tomsich said the two dates are the lowest booked. The required 700 rooms and half are paid for. Don asked about the budget. Derek said it is $185,000. Derek said ACRA put in funds from the new lodging tax. We will also be doing some fundraising. Andrew said he put in $10,000 for Mining for ideas. Nancy said we will also go to the County for funding. Derek said we get spots on the local screen and we can get a feed into the TV. Everyone will be able to watch it on TV. Derek said the finished line is in front of Paepcke Park. We are organizing that right now. The value is in international TV. Andrew asked if there is anything going on the night they are here? Derek said we are working on that also. We would like to offer some kind of entertainment. Derek said Quiz no's will have a pop -ups around town. 3 COMMERCIAL CORE & LODGING COMMISSION MINUTES OF JANUARY 19, 2011 Mark Z asked when the teams will be announced. Nancy said she will send the schedule over. Andrew asked if there is a charity incorporated. Derek said they might have several. Derek said there will be stuff at Peace all day for people to do. Andrew asked if the CCLC can do everything. Derek said as we get closer we will need to market the event. Mark said the upside is the publicity what we get. Andrew said we need to get something for the businesses and get them involved. Fred said the publicity has value. People will ride the route after the race is over just to say that they did it. Mark Z said people in Europe will see Aspen as a biking destination. Bottled water Kathy said Torre's bottled water is being reviewed by the Environmental Health Department and they will have a report late March.
