Plastic Bottles
Councilman Torre said the Parks and Recreation departments are thinking
about a filling station. It is $5,000 for one station and that one would be in
Conner Park and one retrofitted at Wagner Park.
Torre said maybe the skate park would be #2 and if it is successful we will
have 8 or so down the road. Our idea is to introduce this to the community.
I spent time with hotels and they are doing it on their own. We want some
kind of program at the Saturday market since the filling station is going to be
at Conner Park.
Jim said customers at the market ask for water.
Torre said we want the opportunity for kids to make a profit selling the
stainless steel bottles. Three dollars would be a base and they would make
some kind of profit. The selling has to be consistent.
Fred asked how the kick off of the campaign will occur so that the city and
guests are aware. Torre said we will find a way to distribute them.
Torre said the idea is to lessen the plastic bottle usage in Aspen. We are
about to do a community outreach. We want to pass this onto our guests.
Terry suggested a memorial fountain which would off -set the costs.
Fred said you need at least six stations to pull this off.
Torre said we will launch on Earth Day and a national launch day with skier
Gretchen Bleiler. Hotels have filling stations already.
Bill said Parks suggested Conner Park due to the association to the Saturday
market.

Terry said the board knows how to chisel out our businesses. If we don't
have ample space on every block it will fail. We are the richest community
per capita in the United States.
Andrew said in reality one station works. I don't know how quick they can
set them up.
Terry said we are 100% behind you.
Jim said Barcelona Spain has a huge fountain which has more than one
spout. Multiple spouts that fill fast.
Torre there is no water line down the Hyman mall and we don't have
$100,000 to do this.
Jim said in terms of selling it is a good idea. You could put maps inside the
bottles for locations of filling stations.
Torre said at the Viceroy in Snowmass they give away bottles and no one
has complained.
Torre said the Ski Co. is also involved. They look at it as a keepsake.
Fred pointed out that the launch is important.
Andrew said you need a marketing program.
Siam asked about the bottle pricing and if it would change from store to
store.
Torre said they intend to keep the pricing consistent.
