Aspen Farmers Market Suggestions for Future Growth
Please excuse the tardiness of this "wish list". We are busy folks this time of the year. The
following are suggestions polled from the Aspen Farmers Market Group. They are by no means the
last word but rather a compendium of thoughts that seem to be on our agenda at this time. It is
important that a new contract with the City be flexible enough to consider new and innovative ideas
for the market.
Preface: Paramount in our needs for the future is the inclusiOn of restroom facilities closer than two
blocks away. For all the hype on health and cleanliness the fact that we are not permitted access to
the City's restrooms is ludicrous.
It has been our feeling that the City is intent on rtmning the Market and all of its ramifications.
There is little need for a Farmers Market Group or a contract for that matter if the City desires full
control. In fact, the following could just as well be an exercise in futility. Nevertheless our
suggestions follow:
Existing Products and Vendors:
Existing products, e.g., raw vegetables, herbs and fruit, wines, cheeses, bakery items, ices, meat
products, jams, jellies, chutneys, salsas and preserves, honey, flowers, potted plants, gourds,
pumpkins, roasted chilies, to/tillas, eggs, cider, ristras
Other Possibilities:
Candy booth; fish vendor; pasta vendor; honey; nuts(?); crafts made by the vendor and relating to
the "flavor" of the market (whatever that might be); textile and wool products, e.g., spinning and
weaving and their related products; value added and prepared food products since modem agriculture
is promoting this concept; accessory items of individual vendors that relate to their products; variety
of value added and processed meat products; fmger foods like Italian ices or prepared fruit and
vegetable products; soaps; herbal remedies and skin care products; dried or dehydrated fruit and
vegetables; fresh roasted peanuts; canvas shopping bags and farm hats with logos of farm or business;
flu, it smoothies; coffee and espresso; just to name a few.
Activities:
Visiting chefs; flower show for locals; rotating locals booth including a youth booth;
entertainment; face painting; pumpkin carving; balloon sculpting; a locals exhibit booth for artisans
of various media.
Important Features:
You make, process or grow what you sell -no less than 80%, New vendors or products ora
different bent should be pleaded on a case by case basis -just because it's different does not

constitute grounds for denial. A mechanism needs to be built into the process to allow diversity. Use
the expertise of the Aspen Farmers Market Group to foster diversity and growth. Promoting
Colorado agriculture is and should be an important aspect 0fthe market.

Entertainment permit:
Suspension of one, two, or three days?
General Liability insurance with City of Aspen as co-insured means we are
covered as the secondary insured but claims can still be placed against us.
If a permit is issued City of Aspen requires insurance.
If a permit is not required then we require no insurance and claims cannot
go against the city because performers are not permitted.
We still need a policy regarding fire etc.
What do we do with a one day person.
We need to rotate the sites. Not near Pacifica or the Grottos.
Do we want heights, knives, animals etc. in performances.
Ifa permit is required we need to charge a processing fee due to additional
staff time.

Olympic Torch Relay II
Olympic Torch Relay: [~hoose a category ~
Details of the Torch II
Vital statistics: 33 inches (84 cm) long
3 inches (7,6 cra) wide at top
0.5 inches (1.3 cra) wide at bottom
Embodiment of Themes
The 2002 Olympic Torch e,m,,bodies several themes: "Land
of Contrast -- Fire and [ce," Light the Fire Within" and
"Taming of the West -- the Past and Present." It is like a
fiery icicle in mot[on, its curvature representing the
dynamics of speed and fluidity.
'Fire and Ice'
Torch colors are in the cool spectrum except for the
)ic flame, which is showcased by its vibrance and
warmth. The body of the Tomb resembles ice in color and
texture and is constructed of glass and silver metal. The
~ottom segment features crisp lines and a high-polish finish
ending it a modern look. The center section transitions to a
stylized "frozen flame" texture that extends to the g~ass
crown at the top, through which the Olympic Flame
emerges. Inside the glass crown is a bold geometric
structure with a copper finish. This copper structure is
encased in ice and is based on the cauldron, the actual
design of which will remain a secret until the Games.
'Light the Fire Within'
The Olympic Flame, whic~ can be seen burning inside the
Torch's glass crown, is a metaphor for Olympians' oassion
for competition and victory. Each torch will be unique, just
as every Olympic athlete is a true original.
Past and Present
The center section of the Torch has an aged, slightly time-
worn finish while the bottom of the Torch has a clean, high-
polish finish. Torchbearers will hold the Torch at the junction
of these two surfaces, representing the bridging of the past
and present.
Representation
The materials in the Torch represent ideals of the Olympic
Winter Games. Glass represents winter and nature as well
as ice and purity. High-polish silver represents modern
technology. Aged silver finish stands for the heritage
traditions andhe rooms of the West. Copper represents the
fire, warmth and passion of Utah's history.
