On June 27 1983 the No Name Park was officially renamed Robert R ‘Bugsy’
Barnard Memorial Park.
The Bugsy Barnard Park was named after Dr. Robert A. Barnard who served as a
City Council member for two years and Mayor of the City of Aspen, Colorado
from 1966 to 1970. Dr Barnard was responsible for the annexation of the North
and South side, paving the streets, adoption of the City of Aspen’s 1966 Master
Plan and eliminating billboards and neon lights – he was also an advocate of the
concept of underground parking at Wagner Park. Dr. Barnard was murdered in
New Mexico on June 14, 1982.
