REGULAR MEETING COMMERCIAL CORE & LODGING COMMISSION FEBRUARY 20, 2019
Chairperson Jeb Ball opened the meeting at 8:30 a.m.
Commissioners in attendance: Charles Cunniffe, Bill Dinsmoor, Amanda Tanaka, Jeb Ball, Kiki Raj, Terry
Butler, Steve Fante. Absent was Angi Wang
Staff present:
Nicole Henning, Deputy City Clerk
Mitch Osur, Parking Services Director
Other attendees: Councilman Ward Hauenstein
COMMISSIONER COMMENTS:
Mr. Dinsmoor said he needs more coffee.
Ms. Tanaka entered the meeting and said Ms. Wang had an emergency and would not be in attendance.
Mr. Dinsmoor asked for a recap of market matters from the last meeting. Mr. Ball updated the group on
Ms. Strickland reaching out to the new vendors and said he thought a couple of them had backed out.
Ms. Henning checked with Ms. Strickland and she said no one has backed out and she has received
checks from everyone. Ms. Henning also let the board know about Lee Mulcahy receiving a denial letter
for his “aggie” booth. The aggies discussed it and said they must have the land inspected where his food
is grown, etc. They also did not feel that if he is growing food in his backyard, that it would be enough to
supply the market all summer.
Mr. Ball brought handouts which displayed a better method for scoring the vendors for next year.
Mr. Cunniffe entered the meeting.
Regarding the market, Mr. Dinsmoor said that Ms. Strickland needs to be stronger on some of the issues
with the vendors. Mr. Osur said he’d be ok with Ms. Strickland kind of scoring the vendors on her own
regarding their behavior, etc. Mr. Ball said that he and Mr. Osur can work on this together.
Mr. Dinsmoor said it’s not fair if someone doesn’t want to put how much they made the previous year
on their application that then they receive a lower score. Ms. Tanaka noted that all of the numbers they
got were from the vendors and not from the finance department. Mr. Dinsmoor asked if it’s more
important to report their sales or that they have paid their taxes.
Ms. Raj entered the meeting.
Mr. Ball said he will redo the application for the returning vendors and will bring back to the next
meeting. The board continued to make necessary changes to the application.
Mr. Dinsmoor and Ms. Raj both thanked Mr. Ball for creating the application and score sheet and said
both items have been really helpful.
Mr. Ball mentioned the newsletter and said he still feels that we should do one quarterly even though
Ms. Tanaka suggested twice a year. He said it’s more effective and present if we put one out on a
quarterly basis.

Ms. Tanaka said she is fine with this and she’s willing to help in any way she can. She reminded
everyone that they decided on Susie at Souchie as the featured business. She said that Susie hand-knits
all of her cashmere and she really respects her. Ms. Tanaka volunteered to do the interview.
Mr. Ball said that if they get the newsletter out by March 15th, that will be tremendous.
Mr. Fante suggested putting the newsletter inside of banks, NY Pizza, liquor stores, dry cleaners, etc. for
people to access. The board agreed that doing so would be a great idea.
Ms. Henning said she will start linking the newsletter on the CCLC webpage on the city site as well.
Mr. Osur said that he and Mr. Ball can talk to Pete Strecker in finance about the business licenses since
he is the new director. Mr. Dinsmoor said if the city or someone can keep up with email addresses in an
aggressive way, it would be very helpful to CCLC.
Mr. Dinsmoor said that since it’s the beginning of a new year and we have new chair, we should revisit
our mission and potential events for December, alleyways, etc. He said he’s been thinking about this
again because of Winterskol. It’s worse than having nothing because it has lost its relevance. He said
that something whimsical is needed and mentioned the Mad Hatter’s Ball and having piano players on
the mall because those are things that bring the fun and whimsy back.
Mr. Hauenstein mentioned the music school having mall flash events with the music festival. Mr.
Dinsmoor agreed and said they would do it in a heartbeat because the kids love to perform. Mr.
Hauenstein suggested that we have a whimsy contest.
The board asked what happened with the Kemosabe idea. Mr. Osur said that Sara Ott turned it down
due to the fact that a parking spot would be taken away. Kemosabe was instructed to go to Council with
their idea.
Ms. Raj mentioned how Bumble partnered with Frame and said they have had successful events
together. Mr. Osur said we could do something with Bumble during the December slow time.
Mr. Osur mentioned that Ski Co. is doing an après party in April and have already sold 30,000 tickets. He
said that we know music works and when people think of sex, drugs and music, it sells. This is
happening at Buttermilk and is almost the exact same thing as X Games.
Mr. Ball said that in the next meeting, we should identify the things to focus on in 2019 in rank order
and how we’re going to attack. Mr. Dinsmoor agreed and said we need finesse and to partner with
ACRA and Ski Co to get these things and ideas going.
Mr. Osur said we should google December events all over the US and see what other towns are doing.
Mr. Ball said he will put together a list like that for the next meeting.
Mr. Ball motioned to adjourn, Ms. Raj seconded. All in favor, motion carried.
