RE: Hunter Creek Trail Extension - Stream Margin Review Exemption
Dear Chris:
Parks Department staff is currently in the planning phase of a project to construct a 4' wide soft surface
trail that will connect the existing Hunter Creek Trail to the Rio Grande Trail, along the northern banks
of Hunter Creek. This project includes a 6' wide pedestrian bridge to cross Hunter Creek at a point just
upstream of the Hunter Long House. We will be utilizing both Pitkin County owned property (located
within the City of Aspen limits and Pitkin County owned trail easements throughout the entire trail
corridor.
Since much of the proposed trail alignment sits within the 100' high water line of Hunter Creek, we are
formally requesting a Stream Margin Review Exemption as outlined in the City of Aspen Land Use
Code, section 26.435.040, paragraph B, line 1. Under the Exemptions paragraph it states "Construction'
of pedestrian and automobile bridges, public trails........" as items that qualify for the exemption to the
Stream Margin Review. Our project certainly seems to fit these parameters.
It is our request that you authorize this exemption as Community Development Director for the City of
Aspen.
Sincerely:
Austin Weiss,
City of Aspen Parks Department

Subject: Hunter Creek Trail Project
Hi Chris,
As I'm sure you've heard, we are working on an extension of the Hunter Creek trail behind the Hunter Longhouse. It
requires the construction of a new pedestrian bridge over Hunter Creek. I want to check in with you regarding getting a
Stream Margin Review Exemption for this project. I have attached a site plan and an overview of the entire trail project.
The only portion of the project that is in the City(although located on Pitkin County owned property) is the southern
landing of this bridge. We are designing the bridge to be as high as reasonably possible above the creek and it will be
designed to "breakaway" in the event of flood damage and will be anchored to the northern abutment so that it will not
become a hazard.
Please let me know what further information you will require.
Thanks,Austin
