THE CITY OF ASPEN BOARD OF ADJUSTMENT
BY
Mr. John Dukes, Chairma~,
Members of the Board of Adjustments.
I would like to present the following statement for your consideration
of my r~quest for a build~ng permit to add to The Mountain Forge:
When I moved my Forge to Aspen in 1963, it was following 35 years
of operating this type of business in a more temperate climate, the
California coast, where I could store material and equipment easily
outside the main building, and where, if need be, I could work on
large jobs outside for almost all of the year.
After ten years of struggling with the long winters here, I wish
to enlarge the Forge, mostly for the purpose of keeping all material
and equipment not only covered, but inside a heated building. I
enclose some photographs of the portion of the property where I would
like to add on, showing material and equipment which I wish to cover.
With regard to the question of use, I estimate that 70% of my work
falls within the definition of a shop-craft industry, sample photos
of this type of work are enclosed. This has been my life work, for
over 50 years, and I have consistently refused work of a nature which
was not compatible with my Forge. The balance of my business is
about evenly divided between the sale of material, bolts, angle iron,
etc., which I understand is a permitted use, and the fabrication of
plates and brackets for home construction. No repair work is done,
and no work on vehicles.
It seems to me that if a variance is required, it is only for a
very small part of my work, and that approval of a conditional use
is the main question before the Board.
May I add that a substantial part of my wrought iron work has
been shipped allover the United States, not only in the past ten years
in Aspen, but in the previous t~irty-five years in California.
Respectfully yours,
The Hountain Forge, Ltd.,
