2019 Q3 Update
APD would like to continue to update you about what has
been going on in our department. I am sure you have
seen some of the headlines regarding our detectives,
mental well-being, and bears. We would also like to
update you on our hiring.
Quarterly Update Topic #1-
The investigations team is
designed to provide support
for our patrol department
Detectives Corner
This year the investigations’ team has been tested with a
significant number of high profile cases. We have met the
challenges of the job with grit and determination and the
tenacity of our investigators has resulted in many
successes in the most high-profile cases (notably, two
teenagers were recently sentenced to the Colorado
Department of Corrections for 5 and 14 years for sexual
assault).
Quarterly Update Topic #2-
Dr. Elizabeth Sather joined us
for three days of one-on-one
sessions and trainings
Mental Wellness Program
At the beginning of October, we had Dr. Elizabeth Sather
in Aspen, and over the course of three days she provided
one-on-one sessions with individuals and offered two
trainings. It was great to see participation from staff. Many
shared how useful the seminars were, as well as the one-
on-one check in sessions. We will be looking into how to
move forward to continue to provide mental wellness to
our staff.
Quarterly Update Topic #3-
PD is currently at full staff,
counting two trainees
currently at the police
academy
Hiring Process
PD patrol is currently at
full staff, though this
counts two trainees
currently attending the
police academy at
Colorado Mountain
College. The academy
takes a full college
semester, followed by
about the same length of
time for field training.
Current trainees at the
academy include Alyse
Vollmer (left) and
Amanda Severin (right).
Quarterly Update Topic #4-
With a record year, bear
outreach has continued
throughout the fall
Bears
With a record number of bear calls and break-ins this
year, we continued bear outreach through the fall. We
partnered with Colorado Parks and Wildlife to create a
video to promote bear awareness. Outreach will continue
until bears begin hibernating and pick back up in the
spring next year. Throughout the winter, we will be
updating our solid waste ordinances in regards to
recycling and composting.
