Aspen City Council April 15, 1964
Aspen, Colo.
The undersigned are asking you for immediate
action and relief from an unbearable situation :
East Hyman Street, between Galena and Mill
Streets, has been the place for repeated acts of vandalism,
rowdyism, nightly disturbances and +eerob€t e4: sthis past
winter. Smashed windows, broken trees, to or stolen
signs, loitering drunks and littering tourists emptying their
garbage cans in this street can no longer be tolerated by
the many businesses located in this community .
In the face of ineffective police -rotection
one important step shoud be taken at once: The restatzation of
the street lighting which for many years in the past has helped
to discourage cowards who , with the darkness reigning in this
street at the present time, feel safe to perform their lawless
acts under the protection of anonymous darkness.
Almost 6 months ago the store owners on this
street have been requested by the police to light up their
windows at night "until the street light next to the Roaring
Fork Building could be replaced" . Since then this light has never
been replaced ; worse yet , even the wires connecting this light
have been removed and only the pole remains.
A conference with the City Manager ;ti-roduced no
results (March 6th) . Mr. Maddalone of the Aspen City Electric
Department stated that the reason why the light has not been
replaced, was lack of funds. This, in face of the damage exceeding
$2,000.00 this past winter, is intolerable.
The Aspen Police Officers agree with the
residents of this street in that a greater amount of safoty could
be assured by the restoration of the formerly existing street
lighting for which we are herewith petitioning.
