Series TY-FRL – 5.6 K-factor Horizontal Sidewall Sprinkler Quick Response, Standard Coverage Worldwide Contacts www.tyco-fire.com Page 1 of 4 DECEMBER 2016 TFP140 IMPORTANT Always refer to Technical Data Sheet TFP700 for the “INSTALLER WARNING” that provides cautions with respect to handling and instal- lation of sprinkler systems and com- ponents. Improper handling and installation can permanently damage a sprinkler system or its compo- nents and cause the sprinkler to fail to operate in a fire situation or cause it to operate prematurely. General Description TYCO Series TY-FRL 5.6K Horizon- tal Sidewall Sprinklers (HSW), Quick Response, Standard Coverage are sol- der-type spray sprinklers designed for use in light and ordinary hazard com- mercial occupancies such as banks, hotels, shopping malls, offices, etc. They are designed for installation along a wall or the side of a beam and just beneath a smooth ceiling. Horizontal sidewall sprinklers are commonly used instead of pendent or upright sprin- klers due to aesthetics or building con- struction considerations, where piping across the ceiling is not desirable. NOTICE The Series TY-FRL Sprinklers described herein must be installed and maintained in compliance with this document, as well as with the applica- ble standards of the National Fire Pro- tection Association (NFPA), in addition to the standards of any other authori- ties having jurisdiction. Failure to do so may impair the performance of these devices. The owner is responsible for main- taining their fire protection system and devices in proper operating con- dition. Contact the installing contrac- tor or product manufacturer with any questions. Sprinkler Identification Numbers (SINs) TY3321 – HSW 5.6K, 1/2”NPT TY3321 is a re-designation for Star SIN S1878 and Gem SIN G8946. When the rated temperature is reached, the solder melts and the two link halves separate, allowing the sprin- kler to operate. Design Criteria TYCO Series TY-FRL 5.6K HSW Sprin- klers, Quick Response, Standard Coverage are intended for fire pro- tection systems designed in accor- dance with the standard installation rules recognized by the applicable listing or approval agency (e.g., UL Listing is based on NFPA 13 require- ments); however, the minimum dis- tance between sprinklers to prevent cold soldering is 8 feet (2,4 m). The Series TY-FRL HSW Sprinklers must be installed with a deflector- to-ceiling distance of 4 to 6 inches (100 to 150 mm). To meet this require- ment the centerline of the sprinkler waterway must be located 4-5/16 to 6-5/16 inches (110 to 160 mm) below the ceiling. Installation of the Series TY-FRL HSW Sprinklers in recessed escutcheons will void all manufac- turer’s warranties, as well as possibly void the sprinkler’s approvals and/or listings. 9/26/17 TFP140 Page 2 of 4 Installation TYCO Series TY-FRL 5.6K HSW Sprin- klers, Quick Response, Standard Cov- erage must be installed in accordance with this section. General Instructions A leak-tight 1/2 inch NPT sprinkler joint should be obtained with a torque of 7 to 14 lbs-ft. (9,5 to 19,0 Nm). A maximum of 21 lbs-ft. (28,5 Nm) of torque may be used to install sprin- klers with 1/2 NPT connections. Higher levels of torque may distort the sprin- kler inlet and cause leakage or impair- ment of the sprinkler. Do not attempt to make-up for insuf- ficient adjustment in the escutcheon plate by under- or over-tightening the sprinkler. Readjust the position of the sprinkler fitting to suit. Horizontal Sidewall SprinklersNote: The Series TY-FRL HSW Sprin- klers must be installed with their cen- terline of waterway parallel to the ceiling and perpendicular to the back wall surface. The word “TOP” on the deflector must face upwards toward the ceiling. Step 1. After installing an escutcheon (as applicable) over the sprinkler pipe threads and with pipe thread sealant applied to the pipe threads, hand tighten the sprinkler into the sprinkler fitting. Step 2. Tighten the sprinkler into the sprinkler fitting using only the W-Type 9 Sprinkler Wrench (Ref. Figure 2). With reference to Figure 1, the W-Type 9 Sprinkler Wrench is to be applied to the wrench area. General Description The TYCO Series TY-FRL, 2.8, 5.6, and 8.0 K-factor, Upright and Pendent Sprinklers described in this data sheet are quick response, standard coverage, solder type spray sprinklers designed for use in light and ordinary hazard commercial occupancies such as banks, hotels, shopping malls, schools, hospitals, etc. The recessed version of the 2.8 and 5.6 K-factor, Series TY-FRL Pendent Sprin- kler, where applicable, is intended for use in areas with a finished ceiling. It uses a two-piece Style 20 (1/2 inch NPT) Recessed Escutcheon. The Recessed Escutcheon provides 1/4 inch (6,4 mm) of recessed adjustment or up to 1/2 inch (12,7 mm) of total adjustment from the flush pen dent position. The adjustment provided by the Recessed Escutcheon reduces the accuracy to which the fixed pipe drops to the sprinklers must be cut. An intermediate level version of the 5.6 and 8.0 K-factor, Series TY-FRL Pendent Sprinkler can be obtained by utilizing the Series TY-FRL Pendent Sprinkler in combination with the Model S4 Shield. 9/26/17 TFP130 Page 2 of 6 * *** *** * * UPRIGHT PENDENT CROSS SECTIONRECESSED PENDENT 7/16" (11,1 mm) NOMINAL MAKE-IN WRENCH FLANGES ESCUTCHEON PLATE SEATING SURFACE WRENCH AREA STYLE 20 RECESSED ESCUTCHEON Pipe thread connections per ISO 7-1 can be provided on special request. In order to provide a leak-tight seat for the gasket, pipe surfaces should be free from indentations and projections from the end of the pipe to the groove. All loose paint, scale, dirt, chips, grease, and rust must be removed prior to installation. Failure to take these important steps may result in improper coupling assembly, causing leakage. Also, check the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific fitting used. 9/26/17 9/26/17 Features The Gruvlok®Fire-Rite™short pattern fitting system incorporates 90 degree elbows and tees in 2" to 8" size ranges. Dimensions 9/26/17 System Sensor WFDT Retard and WFDTNR Non-Retard T-Tap Waterflow Detectors are designed for primary signaling in residential systems and branch line signaling in larger systems. Both models fit any tee that has a 1″NPT branch, including: 1″, 11⁄4″and 11⁄2″NPT threaded ferrous and brass tees; 1″, 11⁄4″, 11⁄2″and 2″copper sweat tees; Central, Spears®, and Victaulic®brand 1″CPVC tees; and 11⁄2″polybuty- lene tees. Design. The design of the WFDT and WFDTNR makes them easy to install and simple to maintain. Either can be mounted in the vertical or horizontal posi- tion. Two conduit openings permit easy attachment to the local alarm system. The retard mechanism (Model WFDT only) and switch assemblies are field- replaceable. Features.Nine different flexible plastic paddles fit 1″, 11⁄4″, 11⁄2″and 2″tees. Sizes are marked clearly on the paddle for ease of installation. Plastic paddles slip over the actuating lever and are securely fastened with one screw. The handy depth gauge insures the proper installation depth and clearance of the detector to the tee. Construction. The WFDT and WFDTNR include a durable tamper resistant enclosure and rugged switch assembly. The long lasting covers completely enclose the electrical components to keep out dust and dirt. Improved self-guid- ing security screws and removal tools make detectors resistant to tampering and simplify field maintenance. Dual SPDT switches are enclosed in a durable termi- nal block for added strength. Sealed retard mechanism (Model WFDT) assures that the retard is not contami- nated by dust and dirt when the cover is removed Visual Switch Activation (Model WFDT) permits installer to accurately set the retard even under extremely noisy conditions 100% Synchronization activates both alarm panel and local bell simultaneously Accommodates up to 12 AWG wire Models Available WFDT Waterflow Detector WFDTA Waterflow Detector (ULC/Canadian) WFDTNR Waterflow Detector (non-retard) Replacement Parts A77-01-02 Terminal Block for WFDT A77-01-08 Terminal Block for WFDTNR A3008-00 Retard Mechanism PRK9 Paddle Kit 546-7000 Cover Tamper Switch Kit S07-66-02 Tamper Screws for Cover WFDW Cover Wrench WFDN4 NEMA-4 Gasket Kit C58-164-01 Metal Cover Product Overview WFDT Waterflow Detector T-Tap Waterflow Detector WFDTNR Waterflow Detector 9/26/17 System Sensor Sales and Service ©2000 System Sensor.
