Marina,
I understand your concern and see this as a serious safety concern that should be addressed. However, I’m not sure the
narrower sidewalk will solve the issue.
The best solution would be a snow fence on the roof. Can a snow roof be incorporated or I’m guessing the structure is
not able to support the snow load?
Another option is to place signs warning pedestrians of the snow hazard. This is done at the Ice Garden and Red Brick.
With a wider sidewalk the snow still could be shoveled in a manner similar to today’s alignment to keep pedestrians
further to the east.
Not meeting the standard width is not the best alternative to fix this issue, and we will still require the 6’ sidewalk. But I
completely agree it’s a problem and a more effective solution should be sought.

Subject: St. Mary: hunter sidewalk
Hi Hailey,
While Colleen and I were taking some site measurements the other day we noticed a great deal of snow on
the Hunter Street Sidewalk (first photo); as you know, we are not allowed to snowmelt this sidewalk due to the
high tree roots. While I was taking this picture the snow suddenly fell off the eastern roof (second photo). We
thought the picture would be a useful illustration of how far the snow projects into the lawn, and in fact, will fall
exactly where the new sidewalk is proposed.

This situation is obviously dangerous and will be even more so with a wider sidewalk. We had not experienced
this situation before, but now wonder if there could be dispensation made to update the sidewalk but keep it
narrow for safety.
Let me know your thoughts and thank you!
