Hey Colleen, sorry I didn’t get back to you sooner. As long as we got our three feet of clearance on the sides and back
and ten feet in the front. It sounds like you and Ron pretty much have it covered. I’d say it’s a go.

Hi,
I am working with Charles Cunniffe Architects on an interior remodel of St. Mary Catholic Church on Main Street
and have been asked by the Building Department for a letter/email from your department approving the
transformer installation and surround. Earlier in the process of this project, our team had prior communication
with Ron Christian about the transformer. I’ve included that email correspondence below for your reference. A
letter or email sent to either myself or Marina Skiles (marinas@cunniffe.com) approving this transformer
location/construction would be most helpful so we can include it in our responses to the Building Department.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions. Thank you.
Best,
Colleen Loughlin

Subject: RE: St. Mary: transformer
Hi Marina,
I spoke with Ron Christian at Aspen Electric and here is what we discussed (Ron, please correct me if I misunderstood
anything):
1. There are currently 6 sets of conductors coming out of the existing transformer; 2 for the church, 2 for the
rectory, and 2 for employee housing. We are anticipating adding 1 more set for the new service for a total of
7. The transformer can handle up to 11 sets of conductors so we should have plenty physical space for the
upgraded service.
2. Aspen Electric surveys their transformers every winter and the maximum demand seen by this transformer was
163 amps. The 150kVA transformer has a maximum output current around 416 amps. Basically this means we
have a comfortable amount of headroom for the anticipated service upgrade, so existing transformer capacity
should not be a concern. City of Aspen

3. Typically, when performing any work on a transformer/vault that was built to outdated standards, Aspen
Electrical will require a new vault be installed to current standards. Although we have an outdated vault, it is
clean and easy to work with, so we will not be required to upgrade to current standards…on one stipulation….
4. If you take a look at the attached photo, you will see that the grade changes between the level of the
transformer and the level of the dumpster. Essentially there is a 10” concrete step up right next to the
transformer. Ron is concerned that if the transformer malfunctions and needs to be replaced, a newer
transformer may have a larger footprint and will encroach on this concrete step up. He has requested that we
level this grade to ensure power is not lost any longer than necessary should this scenario happen.
So those are the key points to the conversation. If any of you have questions, please feel free to ask. We have several
other coordination items back there (trash enclosure, chiller, etc.) so we should have a coordination meeting when we
all have a better idea of the space these things will need, but for now that’s what I have for you.
