Marina,
I am ok with the 4’ wide snowmelt (pink on plan) for access to the church. I will require specific excavation techniques
and no large diameter, structural roots may be severed in the process. This can be addressed in the tree permit. Your
notes for the Parks Department are accurate.

Subject: St. Mary: City meeting notes
Hi All,
Thank you again for your time and consideration last week. We appreciate everyone’s efforts to make the
permitting for St. Mary as smooth as possible!
Please review the attached PDF and notes for each department below, and let us know if you have any
questions. We plan to have a pre-submittal meeting next week to keep the momentum.
Parks Department Notes:
o Any work performed in the dripline of any tree will require a tree permit; all sidewalk work at St.
Mary, including the front steps, falls within a drip line.
o City Forester, Ben Carlsen, will not approve any snow-melting along Main Street as the deeper
assembly required for the heating will compromise the health of the trees.
o Already the tree roots are at the surface of the ground and have caused significant heaving of
the concrete walkways.
2
o The front steps and area immediately surrounding them could be snow-melted without damage
to the cottonwoods since the grade must rise there to accommodate the new drainage system;
CCA to coordinate exact details with the City.
o Parks will ned a full landscape plan to review the project for approval.
Engineering Department Notes:
o Hunter street sidewalk: 6’ wide, maintaining relationship to trees and encroaching towards the
church
o Main Street sidewalk: 5’ wide sidewalk
o Galena Street sidewalk: no work needed
o Main and Hunter bulb – to be coordinated between city and SGM; more grass possible
Building Department Notes:
o Snowmelt
St. Mary proposes abandoning the internal courtyard snowmelt to add heat to the Main
Street sidewalks for safety reasons.
Snow-melting like-for-like areas is acceptable to the city.
The city will exempt 4’ wide strips of snow-melted sidewalk for accessible routes (e.g.
from street to elevator).
CCA to balance the proposed snowmelt with existing square footages, taking into
account the exempt routes.
City would welcome any additional snow-melting, especially at the curb cut
o Egress
As the occupancy load will not change with the remodel, the existing egress routes are
sufficient.
The sprinkler system must be brought up to current code and super-charges, if necessary.
The stairways must be sprinkled.
Since it is an existing building, the single step at the alley door may remain if the landing is
elongated, as planned; the city would also prefer to see additional lighting, different
color/texture flooring, and a handrail at that entrance for safety.
