Please clarify the following questions in regards to interior slab-on-grade details:
1.) It is unclear from the plans and specifications where the plastic vapor retarder under the interior slab-on-grade is to be
located (directly under the slab and over the 4" gravel layer, or under the 4" gravel layer). Specification section
033000-3.5-A-2 notes to "Place plastic vapor retarder as indicated in the drawings". However, neither the architectural or
structural drawings or details appear to detail the desired location for the vapor barrier. Further, specification section
072600 does not provide direction on placement of this vapor retarder. FCI is assuming the plastic vapor retarder will go
over the 4" gravel layer, but please advise.
2.) Interior slab-on-grade section cuts on A511, A512, and A513 and details on A601 show rigid insulation to be placed
underneath the interior slab on grade. Pre-bid question #36 asked for clarification on the placement of rigid insulation
below interior slab-on-grade, but there is still confusion on what is required. The response to this pre-bid question said to
reference specification section 072100-3.3. but FCI still has the following questions:
a. It appears that spec section 072100-3.3-D directs this under slab rigid insulation to extend in only 24" from
exterior wall. Please verify that this is correct and the intent is not for the under slab rigid insulation to be placed under the
entire interior slab-on-grade.
b. FCI is assuming that this under slab insulation is to meet the requirements of spec section 072100-2.1 (same
product spec as foundation wall rigid insulation). Please verify correct and advise on the thickness of this insulation.
c. Structural details on S300 do not show this under slab rigid insulation. At the locations of this under slab
insulation is it acceptable to reduce the gravel layer the thickness of the rigid insulation, or does gravel layer need to be
maintained at 4" and structural fill thickness reduced?

1. VAPOR BARRIER IS TO BE PLACED DIRECTLY UNDER THE CONCRETE SLAB AND OVER THE 4" GRAVEL
LAYER.

2. UNDERSLAB RIGID INSULATION TO EXTEND IN ONLY 24" FROM EXTERIOR WALL - NOT UNDER THE ENTIRE
INTERIOR SLAB.
2b. ASSUMPTION IS CORRECT. INSULATION TO BE R-15 MINIMUM TO MEET IECC REQUIREMENTS AS PER
SHEET A002.
2c. GRAVEL LAYER SHOULD BE MAINTAINED AT 4-INCHES. THE STRUCTURAL FILL THICKNESS MAY BE
REDUCED.
