Per email correspondence between James Kellogg with STL Thompson and Daniel Gartner with Chamberlin architects, it has been confirmed that the compacted structural fill will not be required. It will be acceptable to install 4" of gravel directly on the native soils and the new concrete foundations will be installed directly on top of the 4" gravel layer. If any large boulders are discovered, they will be removed and the voids will be filled with a compacted class 6 material. REVISION: All building footings will be placed directly onto undisturbed native soils. The building slab on grade will be installed on top of the 4" grael layer Suggestion Answer Date Answered: 9/27/2018 This RFI is for record only, no response is required. Subexcavation and replacement of the natural soils at this site is not anticipated or recommended. Having a contingency for removal of large boulders is a good idea. Voids resulting from removal should be filled with densely-compacted, Class 6 aggregate base course or similar material. A compacted 4-inch layer of Class 6 aggregate base course may be conducive to forming and pouring footings and slabs. Best regards, James James D. Kellogg, P.E. It is understood about the requirements for Structural Fill (page 6 of the soils report). Since nearly all of the AADF building footprint is within the area of “cut” (as opposed to fill) we were wanting to confirm that there are no requirements for 24” of over-excavation and replacement with imported structural fill nor over-excavation and moisture conditioning of 24” of the native/on site soils. Based on the soils report we should be able to place the 4” of gravel directly on native subgrade. We will be carrying an allowance for removal of boulders and filling of those voids with imported structural fill. Can you please confirm this understanding?
