Question Date Required: 10/11/2018
Please refer to the attached model.
The questions below are related to the structural steel for Stair 302.
1. Please confirm the outside perimeter stringers will be exposed to view per 5/A652, while the inside stringers will be
concealed within the gyp of the "divider" wall per 5/A651.
2. Per the spec's, the stringers are to be designed to limit deflection to L/240 or ¼", whichever is less. A C12x20.7 stair
stringers are required, as it passes the L/240 requirement and barely passes ¼" deflection.
3. The lower flight of stairs will need a post located in the stud wall to support the 1st intermediate landing. The mid-flight
of stairs will require hanger columns to support the 2nd intermediate landing. Please confirm the W12x19 (on Grid I,
between 3.5-4.9) is adequate to support the roof column and also the loading from the stairs. MSW is conservatively
figuring 7kips of loading at each hanger will be applied to the W12x19.
4. Please refer to 5/A651. The detail depicts a smaller stringer is to be used, however as discussed in item #2 a C12x20.7
is required. The C12x20.7 has a 3" flange width. This 3" flange will cause issue with anchoring the ½" plate that caps off
the "divider" wall. Rather than using two separate pieces of wood blocking directly over the stud/channel, MSW would
propose to use a 2x12 that would be ripped down to the required width, then the threaded studs used to attach the ½"
plate to the 2x wood block would be offset as necessary to not interfere with the stringers.
5. Please advise what is desire for the stringer reveal at the exposed stringer, and also what is the reveal required for the
interior stringer. Per 5/A651, the gyp is to be attached directly to the stringer. MSW would like to make sure there is
enough channel at the nosing to allow for the gyp to attach.
6. What is the reveal dimension from the stair nosings up-to the top of the ½" plate on the "divider" wall?
7. PR #10 has eliminated the wood treads and now the polished concrete will be used. Is it acceptable to have a 1" return
on the stair pans at the nosing? This 1" return will be exposed.
a. Slip resistant nosings are not supplied by MSW.

Detailed, RFIs Grouped by RFI Number
8. Since the interior stair stringers are to be concealed within the "divider" wall, there is a challenge to make the mid-flight
stair nosings work out correctly. The layout shows the nosing to be held at the same location as the face of the gypboard.
This is causing the nosings to extend past the ends of the stringers by 5/8" at these landings (thickness of the gypboard).
Is this really what is wanted? Is there a way to shrink the tread width of the stairs and increase the thickness of the divider
wall to allow for the mid-flight tread to frame into the stringer?
9. Blackened steel was excluded and shop primer was figured in MSW's proposal. Please confirm this is acceptable.
(Note. MSW will not provide blackened steel. As an alternate, MSW could provide a High Performance Primer for
additional costs.)
10. MSW will provide countersunk holes for wood infill on guard railing posts. MSW is figuring one, countersunk, hole for a
1/8" wood screw for each piece of wood infill.
11. Please supply a detail on how the stair guardrail is to transition onto the upper floor level (how 5/A651 transitions to
5/A611). It appears that the "divider" wall will have a reveal that is greater than what the guardrail will have at the upper
floor. Per 5/A611, the guardrail at the upper floor level is to be a C7x9.8 with a 1" reveal above the slab. This transition
from the floor guardrail to the stair/"divider" wall guardrail will need to be worked out…especially at the base of the
guardrail, as the stair guardrail is depicted to incorporate 12 wood infills (2/A651) whereas the floor guardrail is depicted to
have 16 wood infills (5/A611)
a. 12 Sloping wood infills vs 16 flat wood infills
12. 2/A651 shows the general locations of the guardrail posts. Currently there is no post shown at the locate where the
wood infills "bend" from flat to sloping. Please confirm a post is not wanted here, and if one is needed please is the bend
is the wood is to be held at the stair nosing line. (each bend is directly above the other as depicted in 2/A651)
