Please refer to attached.
1. For Stair 302, please refer to 5/A651. The architectural drawings call for a threaded rod spaced at 2-0 c/c for attaching
the railing to the divider wall. This will not work as the threaded rods are to be placed perpendicular to the sloped wall and
also perpendicular to the flat portion of the divider wall. By having the threaded rods anchoring in two different directions
(sloping and vertical), the rail anchors would "bind" and not allow for the rail to be installed unless enlarged holes are
drilled into the wood blocking to allow for the threaded rods to pass-through.
a. MSW proposes to use countersunk wood screws to attach the railing down to the divider wall. See the attached sketch.
The wood screw that we propose to use would be a #16-9x2 ½ flat countersunk head spaced at 24" c/c. This would allow
the rail to sit on the wood blocking and be screwed in place. Please confirm this is acceptable.
i. This would require at least (2) wood blocking members at the top of the divider wall as shown in the sketch.
ii. MSW will not design how the wood block is attached to the stringer or the metal studs

1. THE DIVIDER WALL SLOPES PARALLEL WITH THE STEEL PLATE. THE THREADED RODS ARE TO BE
PERPENDICULAR TO THE SLOPED STEEL PLATE & SLOPED DIVIDER WALL, THESE ARE NOT VERTICAL (PLUMB).
THEREFORE THESE WILL NOT BE ANCHORED IN TWO DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS AS DESCRIBED ABOVE.
Per 12/21/18 email from Jonathan West: Change the vertical rod at the top to the countersunk lag screw. Countersink lag
screw an additional 1/8-inch to allow for epoxy bondo to be applied & sanded smooth prior to paint.
a. SEE RESPONSE ABOVE. FOLLOW ARCHITECTURAL DETAIL.
i. ADDITIONAL WOOD BLOCKING MEMBERS ARE ACCEPTABLE IF NECESSARY.
