Energy Code Compliance
Applicable to new construction, additions, and alterations that affect the thermal envelope (exterior windows,
doors, walls, roof, etc).
Choosing one of the Five Methods to demonstrate energy code compliance of the thermal envelope, per the IRC
Building Submittal Guide (6/7/17):
1. Prescriptive Alternative: Use the values out of Table R402.1.2 for insulation and fenestration (printed
below). See drawing sections, details, and schedules with values called out.
NOTE: The residence was built in 2004. Assuming the building was built under the 2003 IRC code (Table
N1102.1), the ceiling insulation would meet an R‐value of R‐49. The insulation at the ceiling is assumed to
meet the current code requirements of the 2015 IRC of R‐49 at this time. If R‐49 is not found, rigid
insulation can be added to the new roof system. Assuming the same 2003 IRC condition in the walls, gives
them a value of R‐21. The walls will not meet the current R‐values requested by the 2015 IRC. All siding
that is removed will receive 1” of XPS rigid insulation for an additional “+5”, before re‐siding the building.
2. See U‐Factor Fenestration documents for exterior windows and doors.
