City Manager MEETING DATE: April 23, 2019 RE: Peckham & McKenney Introduction REQUEST OF COUNCIL: The purpose of this work session is for the City of Aspen’s primary recruiter with Peckham & McKenney, Mr. Andrew ‘Drew’ Gorgey, to introduce himself to council, provide an overview of the recruitment and selection process, and discuss next steps. Although no action is requested at this meeting, a date for the project organization meeting will be necessary as the next actionable step. Prior to the beginning of the recruitment process, the project organization meeting will formalize the project schedule and provide a detailed outline of the recruitment process. Moreover, at this meeting, Mr. Gorgey will also be available to discuss expected parameters of the search, the search timeline, and schedule future meeting dates. Upon completion of the project organization meeting, the development of the candidate profile shall begin. BACKGROUND: The City of Aspen recently selected Peckham & McKenney as the executive search firm to conduct the recruitment for a new City Manager. Peckham & McKenney was chosen from seven firms that submitted responses to the City’s request for proposals. Peckham & McKenny has placed nearly 200 city manager and similar positions and has a proven track record in serving resort and mountain communities. In the last several years, Peckham & McKenney has recruited Colorado town managers for Basalt, Telluride, Winter Park and Windsor. The primary recruiter for this search is Drew Gorgey, who served in Colorado government positions for nearly 20 years, including as county manager and attorney for Garfield County before working for Peckham & McKenney. Mr. Gorgey works from his office in Glenwood Springs. NEXT STEPS: Establish a date for the project organization meeting. FINANCIAL/BUDGET IMPACTS: The contract with Peckham & McKenney is for $25,000 with the option for more expansive community engagement initiatives above the initial agreement for an additional cost. RECOMMENDATION: Update only.
