HomeMy WebLinkAboutcoa.cclc.min.020514 COMMERCIAL CORE & LODGING COMMISSION MINUTES OF FEBRUARY 5, 2014 Vice-chair, Riley Tippet, called the meeting to order at 8:30 a.m. Commissioners in attendance: Terry Butler, Kiki Raj, Don Sheeley. Absent were Hana Pevny, Siam Castillo, Bill Dinsmoor and Fred Ayarza. Staff: Kathy Strickland, Chief Deputy Clerk Dan Nelson, Parks MOTION: Don moved to approve the minutes of Nov. 20th, second by Kiki. All in favor, motion carried. Eden Varde's wife said animals are not part of the artisans. They are a highlight of the farmers market. It brings diversity every year and they are a fun player. Melinda Goldrich said she is a supporter of the market. We can sell things at the market if needed. Children sign up for the summer camp. It is a huge highlight at the market and it is a special thing to see. Don asked Eden why they want in the market. Eden said it adds a live vibrancy to the market and I love the Saturday market. Kiki said it is a space situation. Kiki said we are trying to make the market different and dynamic. Terry ask Eden how long have they been in the market. Eden said two years and the first year we had the chickens. Terry said if we go to Hopkins I would like them in the market. Don and Terry said they would like them in the market and they aren't making any money as they are a non-profit. Heiki Burns said she supports Eden and the TREE program and it brings in different things. It is a whole new life style. Tourist love the alpacas. Eden said as an alternative they could be a hosting booth for the non-profits. 1 COMMERCIAL CORE & LODGING COMMISSION MINUTES OF FEBRUARY 5 2014 The board asked Staff to take the application to the agriculture committee to get their comments. Jewelry - Danielle Amato — on behalf of Rebecca Bourke. Kiki said we are taking in new talent in the market and no one is grandfathered in. Danielle said Becky was in the market for years. She has paid her taxes on time. She submitted 100 pictures. She built her business as a single mom. Riley said there wasn't enough there in the presentation that meets our new guidelines and Becky said she is making a new line. How do we monitor with a volunteer staff. Danielle said the T-shirts are not hand made. Terry said with the new jewelry regulations we are trying to get the chain to disappear. She made a choice to do her jewelry with all chain. If it were me I would try to please those who are making a decision. It is a personal choice she made. 12 days of Aspen - Julie Hardman said they are cutting back on the event not knowing the future of it. If the winter market comes in it might be incorporated or eliminated. Kiki said the ACRA stuck to the crowd pleasers. Julie said we had clowns and face painters. Julie said some of that money that wasn't used could possibly go to the winter market. Riley asked Julie what does she need or want from the 12 days of Aspen. Julie said she would like it to be more successful but doesn't think it will. Riley asked what would make it more successful. Julie said a bigger budget and bigger ideas. Julie said it is a tough time of year and people have their agendas already lined up. Riley asked what worked in Winterskol that could work in the 12 days. Julie said she had less restaurants this year. Santa is important. Maybe our focus should change. We have $15,000 budget and spent $10,000. 2 COMMERCIAL CORE & LODGING COMMISSION MINUTES OF FEBRUARY 5, 2014 Don said can we do a survey to the members and see what they feel. Julie said she would do a follow-up with the people who were vending at Winterskol. Julie said participation over the holiday is a problem. Terry said she wanted to see groves of XMAS carolers. Maybe we throw that money into carolers instead of doing the 12 days of XMAS. Kathy suggested musicians around town singing. Julie said we start prepping for the event in the fall. Commissioner comments: Terry said we need another meeting with the parking department and discuss their attitudes with visitors etc. when the weather is horrible.
