Absent were Hana Pevny, Siam Castillo and Fred Ayarza. Staff: Kathy Strickland, Chief Deputy Clerk Dan Nelson, Parks MOTION: Don moved to approve the minutes of February 5th, second by Terry. All in favor, motion carried. Terry said Kathy presented the application at the agriculture meeting and the agriculture board voted to not have him as an agriculture vendor because he is a non-profit. The board wants to come up with regulations for non-profits selling eggs, meat, vegetables in the market that have the potential to compete with existing farmers and do not own or pay for their land. Some of the farmers last year were down 50%. The farmers started this market and it is important that they remain. Don said we can accept Eden Varde into the market as a vendor but to not sell any food or meat products. They are there to display their alpacas and sell the yarn and alpaca products as a non-profit vendor. Dan said Escobar is doing well and Parks has no complaints. Fred Dirkes said he and Jimmy were in the market every other week and were fortunate to be successful. His mother was a local artist and we would like to sell her art in the market. Fred's mother died of breast cancer in California. Most of the work was done there. Kiki said there is nothing that makes the prints Aspen. They were made elsewhere. Bill said the artist is not representing the art. Kiki said they are prints and the originals were done in California and copied elsewhere. Terry said if they were local paintings it would be different. 1 COMMERCIAL CORE & LODGING COMMISSION MINUTES OF FEBRUARY 19, 2014 Terry asked if there are other outlets to sell these paintings. Fred said he has a web base. Hyman Avenue Riley said the construction on Hyman would impact the market. Since then the developers have worked things out. Les is a landlord and he is in support of the market on Hyman. All the developers want to cooperate with the market. Heather Isberian, Isberian Rug said she would call it a hardship if we had to move. Stephen said they would see a great decrease in our income. We have hired two other people to help us on Saturdays to setup and break down and sell. The market is user friendly. Brian Leach, Windriver Gallery said he agrees with Heather. The market is great exposure and people can't find us. Stephen Isberian said they have begun to accumulate specific items in the booth that was appealing. We order in advance with the fish rugs and accessories. We do collect a lot of sales tax. There are times that the street is not active and the market is crucial that we retain that. Little Annie's has also profited in the market. We can work with the construction and it is not an inconvenience when people are smiling and happy. Heather said we enjoy the market. I see all of you wondering by the market. It is messy vitality that we need to keep. Iris Collins, Iris gallery said he talked to his insurance company and with the tents blocking I can't sell my product. People view the art and then go home. A direct drop of foot traffic is important and then the patron goes back home and measure and then purchase the piece late in the week. I don't want my business blocked. Bill suggested Iris find another insurance company. Iris said he has to have an insurance binder. Kiki said our insurance covers everything in her store. Bill said part of making this market successful is not having any holes in the market. Are you suggesting because of the insurance company we will have to 2 COMMERCIAL CORE & LODGING COMMISSION MINUTES OF FEBRUARY 19, 2014 compromise our market. The street is not yours. Are there any images you can put out and take advantage of the people walking by. Iris said he did do images but mentally it devalued the art and the idea behind it. Ian said he moved here in 2012. I became a business partner with my Mother and signed a five year lease. Terry asked if there is a partner. Ian said he has a silent partner. This year I have two part time employees. Don asked what would you say to Isberian's who wants their product out and have been in this community for numerous years. Don said maybe you can put an archway there. Riley said there are alternatives to tents. We need to find out what we can do to be congruous in the market. Iris said we also have a terrace. I just don't want to have a tent. Don pointed out that we also have long time locals who find the market profitable. Stowman Stines, I Pro Center said we are a destination store and the market helps people find our location. We find the market communicates with the clientele. We are basically ambassadors to the town and market. Iris said he would rather go with some kind of archway. Cindy Harris, SW jewelers said Heather has a wonderful business. For a high end jeweler having tents doesn't work for us. Traffic flow is important. Steve said with tents directly in front of us our numbers went down. We could do a jewelry cleaning sign which would be popular. Stowman said we already have the tent in place. They can put signs out. Heather said they can do photographs of the jewelry. Tony Bell, owner of I Pro said he could work with the arch also. 3 COMMERCIAL CORE & LODGING COMMISSION MINUTES OF FEBRUARY 19, 2014 Riley asked that the three owners get together. Bill said you could do an arch that is complementing the market. Mission statement Be supportive of a business friendly environment. Are we actively gaining in-site of the core as to what they want. Riley said we need to be an active wing of the chamber to reach out to businesses to see what they want. Get the pulse. Fred Dirkes — discussion by the board Kiki said his product is printed in Minneapolis with an addition of 1,000 prints. Terry said the prints should be printed at the ABC. Bill said this is not significant enough to fit out guidelines.
