Project No. GS06203.000-145
CTLThompson, Inc. provided a geotechnical engineering investigation re-
port for the Harland Leeds Residence proposed at the subject site (Project No.
GS06203; dated December 20, 2018). Subsequent to our engineering investiga-
tion, we were provided with a grading and drainage plan for the project devel-
oped by Woody Creek Engineering (dated December 12, 2017) that was re-
viewed by the City of Aspen (COA). Comments by COA identify concerns with
several site grading cut and fill slopes that are proposed steeper than 30 percent
(3.3 to 1.0 horizontal to vertical). We have attached a copy of the grading and
drainage plan (not printed to scale), which highlights these slopes.
Based on our subsurface information at the site, the cut slope adjacent to
the south side of the driveway (see attached plan) will be in the natural clayey
gravel soil. In our opinion, cut faces in the undisturbed natural clayey gravel at
this site can be sloped at 30 to 35 percent without significant stability concerns.
We expect fill embankment slopes will be built with the natural clayey
gravel that is excavated to construct the residence. Fill embankments built with
the clayey gravel soils at the site can be 30 to 35 percent with good stability, pro-
vided the soils are placed and compacted as recommended in our geotechnical
investigation report.

Cut and fill slopes should be vegetated as soon as possible to reduce po-
tential for erosion. We recommend use of erosion control mats to facilitate the
vegetation process.
We appreciate the opportunity to work with you on this project. If you
have questions or we can be of further service, please call.
