Discussion items: Learn to Skate User Group Summary: Staff met with Aspen Skating Club and Aspen Junior Hockey to discuss solutions to the learn to skate program. Revolutions Skating Club was not able to attend. A collaboration between the City of Aspen and the Clubs to offer lessons three times a year for all ages and abilities. The city will handle registration the Clubs will oversee the instruction. The program would follow the USA Skating curriculum of 6, 30 minutes sessions working from 3 levels of skating. The ice Program Coordinator will work with the user groups on the specifics of the program details. The clubs will receive 3 hours of ice time for their organization for teaching the program. Private Skating Lesson will continue public skate session, freestyle, and stick and puck with the insurance, contract, and business license. Both coach and participant pay for admission. Instructors who have provided the appropriate documentation with the city will have a photo and bio on www.aspenrecreation.com.The information on the website will help staff and patrons with skating-specific needs. Pickleball Court and Program update: Pickleball court project continues to move through the financial plans, land use permits, and feasible final design. The courts will not be under construction for this year. The center net and court nets will be replaced when the product becomes available. Racket Holders for the paddles will be an additional addition to the courts for convenience. Project Updates: The master Plan has started collecting departmental information like the business plan, SFA work, and building renderings. Spray Features continues to present some challenges on the contractual side, and we are still working on the final products. Leaking Plumbing in the weight room should be repaired this year. Lewis Ice Area roof planning will occur this year and replacement next year. HVAC at Red Brick goes into the gymnasium to help with cooling and air quality. The downstairs remodel is getting to the finish line; we have some light work left. Cameras have been installed throughout to create more safety and security. Financial and 2023 budget process: March has been busy. The current subsidy is 45%. The fee requirement for local individuals has driven membership sales up. Budget development for capital projects begins in May and operational budget development will begin in June. General Updates: Summer programs and activities are open for registration. A couple of events are on the horizon, with an Easter Hunt collaborating with the Aspen Youth Center. The Community Health event is coming up in May, a new event collaborating with Aspen Strong, and organizations focused on mind, body, and spirit. Saturday, the ice team will remove ice from the Aspen Ice Garden. Max Marolt scholarship is open again for applicants’ information is available on the website. The Department is working on staffing for the part-time we have collaborated with the area High Schools, increased pay, and have some bonus programs available. Action Items: Advisory Retreat: Decision to move the retreat to the May meeting extending the meeting 30 minutes to one hour. Regular business will be suspended to focus on the committee.
