A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ASPEN, COLORADO,
URGING THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO APPROPRIATE FUNDS FOR THE
CONTINUATION AND ENHANCEMENT OF INTER-CITY PASSENGER RAIL
SERVICE THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES
WHEREAS Amtrak has provided national passenger rail service since 1971, and
in 2001, Amtrak carried 22 million passengers.
WHEREAS Amtrak serves more than 500 cities and towns across the country,
and provides the most convenient and accessible service in many sections of the country,
particularly in western United States where long distances separate towns.
WHEREAS a quarter milli.on passengers boarded/exited Amtrak at nine stations
in Colorado, in 2001, including passengers who connected with Amtrak buses that
provide Colorado residents and visitors with service to communities without direct
service. Communities with direct service include Fort Morgan, Denver, Winter
Park/Fraser, Granby, Glenwood Springs, Grand Junction, Lamar, La Junta and Trinidad.
Communities with connecting bus service include Vail, Frisco, Colorado Springs, Pueblo,
and Fort Collins.
WHEREAS in the Roaring Fork Valley, the Roaring Fork Transit Authority,
independent fi*om Amtrak, provides hourly connecting bus service available to Amtrak
passengers between Olenwood Springs, Carbundale, Basalt, Snowmass Village, and
Aspen.
WHEREAS passenger rail service is essential to a comprehensive transportation
system in the United States, and is a necessary transportation alternative for those who
cannot or do not choose to drive or fly, and for those who wish to tour the country at a
more leisurely pace.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF ASPEN, COLORADO, THAT:
The City of Aspen hereby requests through the Colorado congressional
delegation that the federal government develop, in consultation with the states, a national
passenger rail network of long-distance trains that connect with shorter rail service routes
in those areas of the country where they currently exist or will exist in the future, and that
the federal government appropriate funds for the ContinuatiOn and enhancement of inter-
city passenger rail service throughout the United States.
