You will identify what issues you want to bring before Council. Tyler W: Is there a certain vehicle we should use to advise you? Torre: We would be looking for a letter of advisement from the board. It would be great if we could get someone from the high school. Nicky: I am the only long serving member, prior to the pandemic we were meeting in person once a month. We need to figure out a time to meet that works best for all of us, we can meet in person or virtual. We need to establish officers, we need a President, Secretary, and Treasurer. Is there anyone looking to fill one of these positions right now? Cody Horn: I’d be happy to volunteer for a position, whatever position is available is fine with me I have no preference. Nicky: I would like to see the positions go to the new people in the group, Cody how would you feel about taking the role of President. Anyone want to second Cody? Michaela: I second All in favor Tyler: I could do the Treasure Nicky: I second, all in favor of Tyler? All in favor Nicky: I’m happy to be secretary but if someone else wants to do that I can do it. Michaela: Second that All in favor Nicky: We have Cody as President, Tyler as Treasurer and I am secretary, next order of business is a good meeting time, we can meet once or twice a month or do a hybrid in between. How is everyone feeling about meeting frequency? Once a month is good, 2 months can get a little too long. Michaela: After 4pm on the weekdays is difficult for me, I would be in favor of something during the day Nicky: Does the middle of the day work for everyone else. Does anyone have a conflict with noon? Cody: Would it be prudent to change the by laws regarding the quorum? Nicky: That would be helpful for us, I would love to amend that. Cody: SO maybe that should be our first order of business, I have other ideas to discuss. Nicky: First order of business is to amend out by laws, the best method may be a google document with revisions and have them all by our next meeting. Zachary K: What does that look like, do we have to submit it to City Council? Nicky: I’m not sure but I believe if we have a quorum, we can vote on them. Let’s decide meeting times, we could do the First Wednesday of every month? Cody: I like first Wednesday at noon. Nicky: Works for me Michaela: Sounds good Cody: Who would be managing the things like the Facebook page and newsletter? Nicky: It has been a volunteer position, not an assigned role. Is there anyone here who would like to take that on. Cody: I could update it after meetings. It would be cook to crossover to Instagram and get a base galvanized. That would give us more traction. Nicky: TO start and relaunch that fresh would be fantastic, our generation is consuming info that way. I want to confirm that we have everyone email addresses. We will do a working google doc with those by laws, over the next few weeks, everyone make edits and we will finalize in our next meeting. Cody we can talk about some of your ideas. Michaela: Maybe we can all talk about our top 2 things we are excited about. Cody: My main things is housing around the County and City. Reframing or reforming the regulations around qualifying for housing. I think there should be avenues for consideration around the lotteries for different situations. Michaela: I am really excited to look at the role of the City Council as a Full-Time position with a living wage salary. We have a $140 million budget, and we need all the brains on for as much time as we can. If they had enough time and real workdays to apply themselves to these issues, we would see much more effective decision making. They wouldn’t be pulled between their day job and their civil work. Tyler: What is the current compensation for City Council? Michaela: I’m not sure but its under $50K. Its technically 20 hours a week but we see them putting in so many hours. Cody: You pay people they will work harder Michaela: I think it would attract a different set of minds, if we can diversify City Council so we have business minds as well as bureaucratic minds the combination would help it, but in order to do that it has to be an attractive role. Tyler: On the contrary if it’s a full-time job you could lose every couple year’s will people be willing to step away from their careers? That could be a limiting factor. I think housing is huge, what we saw with Covid and STR’s, the impact of affordability, APCHA not being able to keep up is my main concern. General affordability, not just housing but an affordability crisis. The Vailification of Aspen, large scale redevelopment where we lose the funkiness of Aspen is a concern. Zachary: I would be interested in some sort of subsidy for that generation that is being priced out of Aspen. Whether it be for eating out, ski pass, etc, is there a way to for a program that makes that more affordable, so we are not being priced out of Aspen. Nicky: I’ve been doing work for a nonprofit developing an app to bring back a local’s menu to Aspen. They’ve developed a map of the local institutions in the valley. The idea of this is you would have an app, after uploading work history and proof of residency you would get a QR code to scan at all participating vendor in the valley to get a local discount at all these places. We realize there is a lot of wealth coming into the community and a lot of these wealthy residents want to give back they just don’t know how. We would love to present this to City Council down the road to see if we could get some sort of subsidy to help fund this. Cody: I would be happy to sit down with you about this. Michaela: It’s our job to look at the issues that will shape Aspen. We need to look at what values we will be working towards. There are so many people with an idea of what Aspen should be. Nicky: Homework, make a list of your 5 values you are passionate about. Cody: What Intergovernmental discussion is happening between the city, County and CDOT regarding construction and timing. It made the city look bad that they are doing a public project with no public access. Tyler: Broader transportation plan for the valley is not keeping pace with the growth and how that aligns with climate goals. Nicky: This is a long-standing issue. As much as we try to get people on public transportation a lot of the traffic is construction vehicles that need tools, so they have to drive their vehicles. Michaela: Another issue is the people working in these private homes. People are privatizing their entire households so there are an entire fleet of private workers coming in replacing the hospitality workers making it harder for local restaurants to get local employees because it harder for their staff to get in. Nicky: These are all great points. There is a high school student that wants to attend some meeting and maybe be a delegate. I would love to have him at our next meeting to learn what we do. He wouldn’t be a board member but a guest to observe and listen. Make edits to the by laws in the next couple week and come to the next week with 5 or more values for our community to embrace. We will decide what issues Next Gen wants to take on.
