HomeMy WebLinkAboutminutes.cclc.070523 1 REGULAR MEETING COMMERCIAL CORE & LODGING COMMISSION JULY 5, 2023 Chairman Jeb Ball called the meeting to order at 8:30 a.m. Commissioners present: Angi Wang, Bill Dinsmoor, Kiki Raj, Charles Cunniffe, Jeb Ball, Amanda Tanaka, Stephanie Davis, and Noemi Kiss-Baldwin. Absent was Terry Butler. Staff present: Emmy Garrigus, Downtown Services Nicole Henning, City Clerk Other attendees: City Councilman, Ward Hauenstein Mr. Ball asked the two new members to introduce themselves. Public comment: The owners of Res Ipsa were present and said they wanted to share their feedback regarding how the Saturday Market vendors were blocking their storefront. They said the way it was last year, with the red carpet and flowers, worked well for them. Mr. Ball said he will make arrangements for he and Kathy Strickland to meet with them on Saturday at 8 a.m. to figure this out. He said he will speak to Kathy and ask that she give the wine guy from Paonia and Brian with Windriver a heads up about a change regarding where their booths will be. Mr. Ball asked Mr. Cunniffe to give a recap of the July 4th parade. There was a discussion about how to make improvements for next year (Marching band, etc.) with the consensus that they should start working with special events now on all the things to come. Ms. Henning entered the meeting. Councilor Hauenstein said it’s the second year that the special events department has handled it the 4th. He wondered if Nancy should coordinate with ACRA. Mr. Cunniffe said it transitioned away from ACRA last year. He said we should start now and pool our resources to make it even better for next year. Ms. Raj said the AVSC party sold out last week as well. The board spoke about the fireworks. Ms. Raj said there was no one authorized to ignite the fireworks. Mr. Dinsmoor asked about dogs and motorcycles yes. Mr. Cunniffe said it was a small group this year. Ms. Raj said she didn’t like the smoke from the dirt bikes. Mr. Dinsmoor went back to the introductions of the new members and asked Ms. Davis about Aspen Deserves Better. She explained what it is and how she was involved. She said they are trying to get people more civically engaged. He asked if either of the new members have been involved with Roaring Fork Leadership because that is a long-standing group which teaches leadership in the community and could be a better avenue than ADB. Councilor Hauenstein agreed and said ADB should look into getting involved with RFL. Ms. Raj spoke about the living lab and said there is still a lot of confusion about parking. Angled or parallel. 2 REGULAR MEETING COMMERCIAL CORE & LODGING COMMISSION JULY 5, 2023 Mr. Garrigus asked her to send pictures and she is happy to get that conversation started. Mr. Dinsmoor asked how the Saturday Market was this past weekend. Ms. Wang said it was busy. Ms. Tanaka said town doesn’t seem as busy lately in general. Ms. Kiss-Baldwin said all of town is about 12% down in general this year and the hotel bookings are less. She said things seem to be going back to normal pre covid years. The hotel numbers are going back to 2019. Mr. Ball said the next meeting on the 19th is a bigger one for a strategy session along with Sarah Roy from the Red Brick. Councilor Hauenstein said council would like to see more involvement from CCLC. He mentioned budget asks. He and Mayor Torre are interested in increased participation. Ms. Garrigus said when they discuss specific projects, we can have a better idea of a budget to request. Councilor Hauenstein spoke about angel investors and about CCLC being involved with properties in the core. They need to bring something to council that they can get behind. Ms. Wang said maybe council can let them know what they should be more involved with. Ms. Tanaka said what Candice Olson did with the map was amazing and she really liked that because it’s needed so maybe they should look at doing that again. Mr. Ball motioned to adjourn; Ms. Raj seconded at 9:26 a.m. _______________________ Nicole Henning, City Clerk
