4th of July Discussion with Nancy Lesley and Sandra Doebler
Mr. Cunniffe welcomed Nancy and Sandy from special events and said they are here as a follow up on
the last meeting regarding CCLC and the July 4th parade.
Ms. Lesley said they would like for the CCLC to help us vet the parade for differentiation’s sake and
juroring and judging the parade. When we spoke about it, the reality is we need to do a pretty big
outreach to participants from past parades and marketing to the community. No one has ever been
turned away historically.
Ms. Raj entered the meeting.
Ms. Lesley said around the 1st of June, we will close registration for the parade. That leaves April and
May to start the process. Does that mean there is a subcommittee? Time is of the essence. How does
that feel or look for you? sandy pulled together some other parades from other towns with themes and
regs to look over. We’re to help and assist.
Mr. Cunniffe said that given the size of our group, we would not do a subcommittee.
Ms. Doebler said the 4th of July will be a mix of last year and historical years and the parade route will be
the same. We are open to creative thinking and the stationary experiences and classic cars will still be
present as people really liked.
Ms. Raj said the kids really liked it.
Ms. Doebler said some side streets will still be closed with stationary displays, but it’s ultimately your
decision. Hopkins, Hyman and Cooper are planned for the displays, and we’d like to do something in
Wagner Park itself. The parade would be from 11 am -12 pm and the experience from 10 am – 2 pm.
Mr. Cunniffe asked if anything will be limited, such as fire hoses. Ms. Lesley said it would be beneficial to
make certain sections water friendly zones, but it’s all open for discussion. Our goal for this year is to
have an insert or full-page ad in the paper prior to the holiday outlining everything that is happening. It
would ideally encompass the whole thing to give people the full picture.

Ms. Raj asked if there is a payment to be a part of the parade and Ms. Lesley said no.
Mr. Cunniffe asked how many applicants they typically have, and Ms. Doebler said 80 or so.
Ms. Lesley said we want to keep the parade to an hour. The kids on bikes, the vets, the calliope, are all
grandfathered in. The motorcycles are still up in the air. We met with the horse council, and they would
consider a horse and a trailer with hay wagon. Mr. Cunniffe said the horses are a good compliment
because it’s another part of our community.
Ms. Lesley said they work on an application and bring back to the next meeting. We can bring back to
you for approval and then have two meetings dedicated to go through the application. Ms. Tanaka said
the process should be done and people notified by June 1st. The deadline for applications would be May
27th. Then have two meetings June 1st and a special one on the 8th and notify by the 9/10th.
Mr. Cunniffe asked if the judging would still take place at the Jerome and said he likes the idea of one
judging place. Then we can have a panel and talk to each other. Ms. Lesley said she doesn’t know if the
Jerome will charge to do that or not and then it would be based on cost, but they will find out.
Ms. Wang entered the meeting.
Ms. Tanaka said the fact that it’s our historical spot is important, and Mr. Cunniffe said he is happy to
approach it from the historical society point of view. It should be more of a community volunteer thing.
Ms. Lesley said another alternative is to have it at the fire station.
Ms. Doebler asked if CCLC would want to also vote on the grand marshal as it is a community figure that
starts the parade. She said they can also do an application for that and sometimes we’ll ask people to
nominate people. She said they do have a 4th of July website: aspen4th.com and they can put a
registration form on there for grand marshal etc. The evening entertainment will be laser light show as
fireworks are still not going to be a thing. We’re hoping to do some coordinated music. We heard from
people that they want their afternoons and then have something in the evening. She said the music tent
will do their afternoon concert from 4-6. We’re looking at the stage and having a DJ or a band perform
up to the 9:00 light show.
Ms. Tanaka motioned to approve the minutes; Ms. Raj seconded. All in favor, motion carried.
Commissioner Comments:
Ms. Raj said she was at Copper mountain for a ski race and the bus system is so much more impressive
than ours.
Mr. Sear gave an update regarding the Saturday Market and said they are bringing in a porta potty for
the vendors. He’s working with Jodi Smith on the parking issue. Ms. Raj said the Armory needs to be
available to the market in the summer.
Ms. Tanaka exited the meeting.
Ms. Wang said she put in her suggestions on the survey for the Armory and asked how they present this
to city council. Ms. Henning said CCLC can make a recommendation to council.
Mr. Sear said he updated the city’s website where he put the vendor lists on the Saturday market page.
