HomeMy WebLinkAboutcclc.min.042022 1 REGULAR MEETING COMMERCIAL CORE & LODGING COMMISSION APRIL 20, 2022 Chairman Jeb Ball called the meeting to order at 8:40 a.m. Commissioners in attendance: Angi Wang, Bill Dinsmoor, Terry Butler, Jeb Ball and Charles Cunniffe. Absent were Kiki Raj and Amanda Tanaka. Staff present: Nicole Henning, City Clerk Mike Sear, Deputy City Clerk Nancy Lesley, Director of Special Events Sandra Doebler, Special Events Coordinator Other attendees: Sarah Lasser of ACRA Public Comment: None. Commissioner Comments: Mr. Cunniffe caught up the members of CCLC who missed the previous meeting on what they are helping with on the 4th of July. 4th of July Discussion with Nancy Lesley and Sandra Doebler of Special Events: Ms. Lesley said there should be around 40-50 solid applicants and spoke about the goals for today’s meeting: forms review, theme, and registration date. Mr. Dinsmoor asked about total budget and Ms. Lesley went over what that covers including security, light show and outreach materials. Ms. Wang entered the meeting. Ms. Lesley discussed the dancers and some logistics surrounding their performance in Wagner Park. Mr. Dinsmoor asked about a budget for red, white, and blue bunting. Ms. Lesley said they bought a bunch last year, and actually put them up on the construction sites last year. Councilor Hauenstein said he has a guy that is into drones and mentioned light shows. He’s going to put the ladies in touch with him. Mr. Cunniffe said what we are hoping to determine today is feedback on the applications. Ms. Lesley said we will start emailing past participants next week and put an ad in the paper and start notifying them of the deadline. Ms. Lesley said she would like to pick a theme for the day. Ms. Doebler named of some options they came up with, such as, United We Stand, Parade of Stars, Celebrating the American Dream, Traveling the USA, Winning Spirit, The Best is Yet to Come, A Bright Future, etc. 2 REGULAR MEETING COMMERCIAL CORE & LODGING COMMISSION APRIL 20, 2022 Mr. Dinsmoor suggested Duct Tape and Diamonds since it’s present and everyone knows what that means. Ms. Doebler asked how we make that patriotic and Mr. Dinsmoor said the day itself is patriotic. Councilor Hauenstein said we’ve been trying to focus on “old fashioned family” but he would like to see something that conjures the Aspen spirit. Mr. Dinsmoor asked about parade marshals and Ms. Lesley said that’s the next question. Ms. Doebler explained the process of the grand marshal. Ms. Lesley said she thought the theme shouldn’t project exclusivity, so Mr. Dinsmoor suggested, “Duct Tape and Diamonds – Aspen for All”. Ms. Lesley said you could also flip it and say, “Aspen for All – Duct Tape and Diamonds” and said we will revisit the theme at the end of the meeting. She passed around some mockup ads for the paper. Mr. Ball said the May date makes a lot of sense since more time is better than less time. It’s the last Friday in May. Councilor Hauenstein said he would like to see an EV parade with the Tesla’s, etc. Ms. Lesley said they could put some ads out there, saying if they have an EV vehicle, to apply. Mr. Cunniffe asked where things stand with the motorcycles and Ms. Lesley said if they get the state patrol motorcycles to bookend the Harley’s, they will allow it to provide more structure and to avoid an incident/accident. Mr. Cunniffe asked about the flyover and Ms. Lesley said there is a gentleman who is a citizen with his own private plane and Rick Ballentine got all the fly overs for 9-11 so he has the contacts. Councilor Hauenstein asked who the festival board of directors are, and Ms. Doebler said that would be CCLC. Ms. Lesley directed the meeting back to themes and the group decided on: Aspen 4 All: Duct Tape & Diamonds. Mr. Dinsmoor suggested Mike Kaplan for the parade marshal. Ms. Lesley said if the board speaks to someone and they have issue with this theme, please reach out and let us know. We would like to lock and load this by Monday. Councilor Hauenstein said there is a community celebration at the Red Brick from 4-7 pm tonight. Ms. Wang motioned to approve the minutes; Mr. Cunniffe seconded. All in favor, motion carried. Mr. Ball congratulated Ms. Butler on the sale of her hotel. Ms. Butler said they will keep it the same and run it the same and she will keep living there in perpetuity. It was a wonderful deal and said she is supposed to sign in 30 minutes, and they are very local buyers. Ms. Wang motioned to adjourn; Mr. Ball seconded.
