Commissioners in attendance: Angi Wang, Terry Butler, and Kiki Raj were present. Absent were Jeb Ball, Amanda Tanaka, and Bill Dinsmoor. Staff present: Nicole Henning, City Clerk Other attendees: Kathy Strickland, Aspen Saturday Market Manager Councilor Ward Hauenstein Commissioner Comments: None. Saturday Market Review with Kathy Strickland Ms. Strickland said this was a really successful summer. She said for this next year, the dates will remain the same. She spoke about how awful the port-a-potty situation was and with having 5,000 + people coming through the market, they need a better solution for next summer. Ms. Henning said there is a meeting set up with the special events department for the first week of December to get the bathroom situation sorted out. We may be able to have the Armory opened back up as well, but we don’t know who will be renting the space yet. Ms. Strickland said there were just a couple of accidents that were resolved, one being with a man who tripped on a tree limb in the park. Regarding vendors, CCLC, did the best job this year in selecting them. Everyone loved the new vendors and they all worked well together and bonded with each other. She said the reserve list was weird this year. There were a couple of vendors who never showed, Beth Olsen and Janet Nelson. Meryl Bryan came every week, so she was great to have on the list. Most of the non-profits were great. There were some that couldn’t find help and did not end up attending, such as, Aspen Strong and the Wilderness Workshop. Ms. Strickland suggested that on the application for next year, we should add in something saying that the artisan needs to be present at the market, and not farm out the duty to others. She doesn’t think that is right. The board agreed. She said that all of the aggie vendors this year were great and sold out of product as always. She said she received some backlash from a woman from Ridgeway who does yoga. She was upset that she has applied the past couple of years and hasn’t gotten in. 2 REGULAR MEETING COMMERCIAL CORE & LODGING COMMISSION NOVEMBER 16, 2022 Mr. Cunniffe asked if there is any vendor who should not come back next summer and Ms. Strickland said no, they were all great. She said Lana Trettin was on the reserve list and came on the wrong date and was in someone else’s booth, but it all worked out ok. She will not be coming back this next year, as she is moving to Australia where her daughter lives. Ms. Strickland said she has notified everyone to pay their taxes with the finance department. Regarding the 2023 application, we will need to add in the blurb about the liability insurance, which most vendors already have anyway. She said she checked with all of the vendors who currently have propane tanks and they all have insurance, so it shouldn’t be a big deal. She said she would like for a mission statement to also be added to the effect of, “the goal of the Aspen Saturday Market is to promote local artisans to achieve their goals by exposure in the market”. She said the psychics aren’t coming back for various reasons, but that Felicia who does massage will be back under the tree. The board discussed adding a blurb in the application about the application fee being nonrefundable if you bail for one reason or another. They also want to add a disclosure stating that all applications are proprietary. Ms. Strickland said she did have some trouble with the new owner of Louis Swiss because she wanted to bail on the last few markets, but she ended up finding people to make it work and have a presence. Ms. Strickland said she told her that they would not get into the market the following year if they didn’t show up for the last few dates. The board confirmed the same dates and times for the market for 2023 being from 8:30 a.m. -2:00 p.m. beginning June 10th and ending October 7th. Ms. Raj said the harvest was later this year so maybe we make it start a week later. The board told Ms. Strickland to check with the aggies and see how they feel, and they will defer to them. She said she will call Jeff since he is the chair and let him make the call. Ms. Strickland said she is having trouble with managing the barricades through 3:30 p.m. because she is also having to deal with the recycling and compost herself. She would like to reach out to Alyssa with Green Clean and hire them to manage this next summer. They could come from 12-2:00 p.m. so that she can focus on the barricades. Ms. Henning asked if there is enough in the budget to hire them and Ms. Strickland said yes, $6000 or so. Since this is the 25th year of the Saturday Market, Councilor Hauenstein suggested something special be done to celebrate that. The board agreed. Ms. Raj motioned to approve the minutes of October 26th; Ms. Wang seconded. All in favor, motion carried. Ms. Wang motioned to adjourn; Ms. Raj seconded. All in favor, motion carried. _____________________ Nicole Henning, City Clerk
