HomeMy WebLinkAboutminutes.cclc.060723 1 REGULAR MEETING COMMERCIAL CORE & LODGING COMMISSION JUNE 7TH, 2023 Chairman Jeb Ball started the meeting at 8:40 a.m. Commissioners present: Angi Wang, Bill Dinsmoor, Kiki Raj, Charles Cunniffe, Terry Butler and Jeb Ball. Absent was Amanda Tanaka. Staff present: Mike Sear, Deputy City Clerk Emmy Garrigus, Downtown Services Nancy Lesley, Director of Special Events Wesy Armour-Cook, Assistant Manager - Special Events Other Attendees: Alycin Bektesh of ACRA Ms. Raj motioned to approve the minutes of April 5th, 2023; Ms. Butler seconded. All in favor, motion carried. Update on 4th of July from Nancy Lesley and Wesy Amour-Cook: Mr. Ball introduced Ms. Lesley and Ms. Armour-Cook and asked them how CCLC could make the 4th better. Ms. Armour-Cook discussed the plans for the parade and mentioned that they had already received 32 entries so far. She also noted that unless the entries go over 50, they should be able to accept everyone. She said that the Hotel Jerome had been booked for the judging. Led by Ms. Lesley and Ms. Armour-Cook, there was some discussion about a few proposed themes for the parade. There was then some more discussion about the details of the timing and various events planned for the day. They commission members then discussed who would be willing to be a judge for the parade. It was decided that Ms. Raj, Mr. Cunniffe and Ms. Wang would be judges. Ms. Lesley said that the three categories for judging that were used last year would be the same for this year’s parade. There was then some discussion of the potential of having a marching band in the parade. The topics discussed included the overall cost of having one and what options were available for housing them. Both Mr. Cunniffe and Ms. Raj asked staff to seriously look into the possibility of getting a marching band for the parade. Ms. Bektesh asked about the Community Village aspect of the events. Ms. Lesley and Ms. Armour-Cook went over the details including the specific streets that would be utilized for it and said that it would be very similar to last year. Next, the possibility of fireworks was discussed. There was then some discussion of the overall budget for the 4th of July events. Mr. Dinsmoor asked if the Special Events department had a specific budget for it. Ms. Lesley said it came out of the overall Special Events budget. 2 REGULAR MEETING COMMERCIAL CORE & LODGING COMMISSION JUNE 7TH, 2023 Mr. Ball then asked Ms. Garrigus about her meetings with individual CCLC members. Ms. Garrigus said that she had met with several members to get a sense of their experience on the Commission and to explore ideas of other things the Commission could be doing. Mr. Ball then said that he and Ms. Garrigus would be holding a strategy session with CCLC at their July 19th meeting. Mr. Dinsmoor talked about and described past public art installations that CCLC used to organize and fund. There was some discussion of the upcoming art installation in front of the Wheeler. Mr. Dinsmoor then asked who the City Council member is that is working with CCLC. Mr. Ball said it will be a rotating member and Mr. Cunniffe said he thought it should be one member for consistency.
