HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes.ARC.20240305.Regular Aspen Recreation Advisory Committee Meeting Minutes: March 5, 2024 Call to order: 12:00 pm by Erin In Attendance: Harlan Pratt Committee Member Karen Dillon Committee Member Tony Greene, Committee Member Michaela Idhammar, Committee Member Erin Hutchings, Recreation Operations Manager and Committee liaison Desiree Whitehead Recreation Manger Jay Slater Recreation Operations Manager Jenn Ooton City Manager Office Absent: Ryan Doremus Committee Member Chair Karen Dillon Committee Member Candace Cross Committee Member Public Comments: None Committee Comments: None Staff Comments: None Agenda Approval: Approved Meeting Minute Approval: None Discussion items: Welcome New Member Michaela Idhammar: Aspen Youth Center Director Committee Discussion: The committee has 5 members appointed by SPARC and two members appointed by Aspen City Council. The Chair is Ryan Doremus and currently we are seeking a co-chair. Erin and Desiree will review the governing documents for the committee and make some recommendations. The committee chair and co-chair run meetings and help the Recreation Department with business operations, policy alignment, and advocacy. The business plan will be ready for review in the coming weeks. Program, Project, and Facility Updates: The Aspen Ice Garden will have extensive projects this summer. A new cooling tower and major overhaul including the replacing pumps and components of the refrigeration system. Two programs, novice hockey (and adult beginner learning group), and curling drop-in have been going well. The annual Ski Patrol vs Ski Instructor game was a huge success and brought a lot of the community together. The annual Aspen Skating Club Show will be held on the 16th of March. The ice team is getting ready to transition seasons. Ice will come out of the Garden beginning April 8th after the Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic. (curling and hockey) Aquatics is going well; we are anticipating heavy crowds throughout March. Kayak Open Roll session begins March 5th. Basketball programs over the winter have gone very well. Teams were able to compete with local rivals. Kindergarten basketball is about to begin. The team has hired the cycle bar fitness instructors, and we hope to have more robust spin class options. Easter is early this year, and the Easter egg hunt will be held on March 30th. Financial: The 2023 recovery rate is coming in around 45%. The current trend of revenue is looking positive. Expenditures continue to rise in both labor and utilities. The Recreation Department will continue to work on subsidy expectations and council goals.
