Chairperson, Bill Dinsmoor called the meeting to order at 8:30 a.m.
Commissioners in attendance: Terry Butler, Eric Cohen, John Start, Jon
Busch, Andrew Kole and Charles Kennedy.
COMMISSIONER COMMENTS
Georgeann Waggaman talked about sharing a booth with Grace. There is a
lot of interest in the art booth.
Georgeann said she wants the exposure. Grace agreed to include Georgeann
in her booth. There are a lot o£artist in the valley and she is trying to get
them involved.
Grace said she cleared it up with Larry regarding the business license.
Andrew asked i£the group could pack ap earlier.
Grace said it tends to die down about tWo p.m.
CCLC said i£the grOuP agrees to pack up collectively it would be OK.
Eric said he doesn't want to force somebody to sit there but the critical mass
attracts people.
Eric and Ten~y said the market should go from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00,
Jon said it is premature to start tinkering with the vendors.
Terry said this is something new and we will be able to better the market.
If we need to have to shave hours then we need to realize this is our first try
and we are working to get it better.
Charles said we might be able to move booths to Hopkins. Bill said some
vendors might want to start after the cooking demonstration and that issue
needs addressed.

MINUTES OF JULY 17, 2002
Andrew said if the food demonstration is pushed to noon it might be
beneficial in keeping vendors coming to thc market.
Bill relayed that the board should be tweaking the hours but if people need
to leave a little earlier than four there is discretion that can be applied,
As a policy we should not change the hours right now.
John talked to Jack and he was positive about thc entire summer experience
of the market. Jack asked about the music.
Bill said the CCLC spoke to Gracy's about what could and couldn't happen
and they have gone off on their own to do their music which in some ways
compliments the Saturday Market but they do it in the court yard. They are
responsible if the amplification gets too loud.
Charles said he felt the Saturday Market should include some type of
information booth.
ASPEN MUSIC FESTIVAL - MALL REQUEST
Laura Smith from the Aspen Music Festival requested to be on the mall to
sell tickets and hand out information on the festival. The event would occur
five Fridays. Laura said they would answer questions about what they do
and try to interest people in concerts. The tickets would be available by
Paradise Bakery on the mall.
MOTION: ,4ndrew moved to approve the request for the Music Festival to
be on the mall to hand out literature and ticket information; second by Eric.
~4ll in favor, motion carried.
EVENT COORDINATOR
Bill went over the marketing/special event meeting held by the ACRA.
Laura Smith said she also attended. They went over events held in the
summer and winter. They all agreed that more information is needed on
what venues are available. Information is also needed on what resources are
available to hold events. Arc there events that can be piggybacked?
John asked if any action came out of the discussion.
COMMERCIAL CORE & LODGING COMMISSION
MINUTES OF JULY 17, 2002
Bill proposed and Molly Campbell echoed that initially the CCLC should be
an advisory group to the marketing committee of the ACRA, which is an
advisory group to the ACRA board.
Andrew said the first meeting was broad. He said the market event person
should come out of the ACRA budget budget.
Bill said the real thrust of the ACRA marketing money is to protect the
$400,000 money. How mUch of the money can underwritten to go for
salaries is of concern and they will have to defend that to city council.
Laura said she agrees with the CCLC that there is a need for a marketing
director and feels that something promotional could be put together around
the opening of their festival
Jon said there is no cOordination anywhere in the city. The Ski Co. does
their own, the ACRA does their own and the City etc.
Eric said an event coordinator position would draw all parties together.
Bill said he got the feeling that the meeting was to "circle the wagon" and
protect the money. There is no one on the ACRA that can handle an event
coordinator.
Jon said we have a product that we are not selling very well. Resources and
menus are missing throughout town.
John said we need to be focused and know how much money we need to ask
for and how to play it and figure out the politics.
Laura said she would be glad to get involved with the CCLC. The MAA
should be involved with the marketing of events. The will market events
that they make money off of.
Charles mentioned the summer camp, which could tie in with new events.
We need a gateway and champion an idea.

SATURDAY MARKET
Caroline Maher presented mixed media notes etc. The CCLC accepted her
in the Saturday Market.
COMMISSIONER COMMENTS
John mentioned getting a better mix in the city. John suggested getting the
landlord to a meeting to discuss rent etc.
The concern that Ten5' has is that stores are leaving and comer spaces are
left open.
Jon said critically we could encourage and ask the council to consider a
zoning change to prohibit a certain kind of business on ground levels.
It is impossible to establish rent control.
Eric said you can control the use but you cannot control the rent.
Eric also mentioned that there should be some pressure that Aspen should
be connected with Eagle/Vail airport.
Sustainability meeting update.
John said one thing that was clear is trying to reach out something concrete
that the committee could move forward with such as the DEPP program.
Bill said at the meeting they discussed the malls and what could be done to
improve them. There are structural issues on the mall mad there needs to be
better lighting.
Jon said the T-shirt shops are places you can go in with the intent of buying
something. A timeshare office with photographs is not the kind of stuff that
engenders interest of the general public. If you are thinking of buying you
will go to real estate offices wherever they are.
The businesses that can afford the rent are the real estate businesses.

Charles mentioned the time-share issue and 51% of the cost is sales and
marketing.
Charles said Vail doesn't fly large planes in the summer. Possibly Aspen
could get behind Vail airport.
