Chairperson Cunniffe called the meeting to order at 8:55 a.m.
Commissioners present: Jeb Ball, Charles Cunniffe, Stephanie Davis, and Terry Butler
Staff present: Nicole Henning, City Clerk; Emmy Oliver, Downtown Services
PUBLIC COMMENT: None.
PRESENTATION WITH LARA XAIZ – WILDLIFE COORDINATOR
Ms. Xaiz began her presentation at 8:43 a.m. with three members present.
Ms. Xaiz said she was previously with the Aspen Police Department and is in a new position with the
Parks department regarding wildlife. She is here to speak about bear activity in Aspen this season. There
was a shortage of acorns and berries this year, so the bears are coming into town more to find food
sources. She had started keeping a spreadsheet of who to contact for various dumpsters around town
when she was in the Police department and has carried it over to Parks now to help when reaching out
to people. She spoke about what owners and restaurants did this season to make the bear and
dumpster issue better. She said the CORE and compost program has gone really well and the bears did
not get into compost bins at all. The recycling bins are getting into, however.
Ms. Xaiz spoke about a couple of home break ins that happened and when CPW will get involved.
Ms. Butler entered the meeting at 9:00 a.m.
Ms. Davis asked how much relocation is being done and Ms. Xaiz said there were two or three.
Relocation doesn’t work that well. They will find their way and come right back. CPW gives them two
tags and a chip to track them. We only had one bear be put down this season and that is low considering
years past.
Ms. Xaiz said she is based in the Parks department and to please call 920-BEAR or email
bears@aspen.gov for help with anything.
Mr. Cunniffe asked about the Saturday market aftermath and if there were issues. Ms. Xaiz said the
recycling bin has had a lot of contamination and the bears got into that several times. They figured out
how to open the compactor as well.
Chairperson Cunniffe opened the meeting at 9:10 a.m.
Ms. Davis motioned to approve the minutes; Ms. Butler seconded. All in favor, motion carried.
Mr. Ball gave an update to those who were absent last time about the Saturday Market survey and
results.
Ms. Henning said the board must vote on a few items at the next meeting, so we hope to have full
attendance next time.
Mr. Ball motioned to adjourn; Mr. Cunniffe seconded. All in favor, motion carried. At 9:30 a.m.
