Subject: RE: Fire Table
Brendan,
There is not a section in IRC chapter 10 for open fire pits, which is why it would need to comply as a fireplace with a
compliant chimney termination if it is wood burning and under a roof. Sorry if I confused the subject regarding that. An
open wood burning fire pit under a roof is not allowed by the IRC.
I think that per your attachment you could install the pit under a covered porch as long as you had the required 60"
clearance above the unit. That seems to meet all relevant requirements on pages 3 &4.

Justin,
This will be an open gas burner installed in a site built fire-table with open flame. It seems all clearance requirements
will be satisfied with our design (SEE attached pages 3 &4).

I don't see any language in IRC Chapter 10 regarding wood burning firepit under an enclosure. Please direct to
applicable code section.
Are we still allowed to have this open gas flame burner?
Thank You,
Brendan Hamlet

Subject: Re: Fire Table
Hi Brendan,
Is this a gas appliance or a wood burning firepit/fir-table? If it is a gas appliance we would defer to the installation
instructions for required clearances. If it is a permanent wood burning firepit then we would apply the requirements IRC
chapter 10 which wouldn't allow an open fire pit under any covered area, you would need to have a chimney that
extends 2' above any portion of the building within 10' (IRC 1003.9).
Thanks,
Justin Hahn

Hello,
We are designing a covered porch and desire to place fire-table/firepit underneath the roof enclosure. I have done
some research on this topic but am unable to find any regulations. Is this allowed under IRC and/or Aspen building
regulations? Are there any clearances we need to respect? If so, please direct me to applicable literature.
