The lower level structure consists of a D-Log system with a standard gable roof above. The upper level was added above the existing lower level structure with the floor framing occurring above the existing roof, which remains in place. This creates a triangular shaped attic space between the existing roof sheathing and bottom of upper level floor joists. It is desired to raise the head height of the 8'wide window in the lower level living room. Currently, there are two courses of D-Log spanning above the window. It is understood that the window would be raised, eliminating one course of D-Log. A review of the new upper level framing indicates that the floor loads and roof loads are carried by a 2-117/8" ML that runs around the perimeter of the structure supported by 2x4 studs at approximately 24"on center. I was able to observe the framing above the lower level kitchen window which consisted of the 2- 117/8" ML header spanning the width of the opening with a 2-2x4 column at each end of the opening. There were no intermediate studs under the header for the extent of the opening. However, due to ductwork and miscellaneous items in the attic, I was not able to observe the existing framing condition above the living room header. Analysis indicates that the 2- 11 7/8" ML is structurally adequate to carry the upper floor and roof loads without relying on any contribution from the D-Log header below for the width of the living room window. Verify that both plies of the ML header are continuous for the full extent of the opening below(approximately 8'-6"). Also, ensure that a minimum of 3-2x4 columns are located at each end of the opening to transfer the load to the structure below. Please contact me if any of the above conditions are found to vary from as indicated. Sincerely, Adrienne Prosser, PE vice-president Ip 18031.
