They include two types: - open gas fires - closed gas fires (balanced flue system) All our gas fires are equipped with a burner that can operate with natural gas or propane (LPG). The natural-looking flames, escaping between ceramic logs, pebbles or stones, are almost unmistakable from those of a wood fire. The choice of the type of gas and the hearth furnishings are specified on order. Focus fires have the ability to operate on battery power, and can be connected to the mains by an adapter (optional). A remote control allows the control of many functions, including lighting and extinguishing the fire, adjusting the room temperature, programming the operating time, and switching to eco-mode (which reduces gas consumption by up to 40%). Open gas fires require a minimum flue length of 5 m from the hearth base to the top of the chimney stack. No damper is permitted anywhere in the flue. The closed gas fires have sealed glass panels that can only be removed during the maintenance check (once per year). The doubled-walled flues (balanced flue system) allow the evacuation of burned gas as well as draw in air from outside for combustion. These flues can be bent at 90° to exit from the wall of a building. The installation of all gas fires must be carried out by a licensed gas fitter. Les flammes, ondoyantes et naturelles, s’échappant d’entre les bûches, graviers ou galets décoratifs en céramique, ressemblent à s’y méprendre à celles d’un feu de bois. Les mécanismes des appareils à gaz, livrés pour fonctionner sur piles, peuvent être raccordés au secteur via un adaptateur (en option). Outre l’allumage et l’extinction de l’appareil, la télécommande offre de nombreuses fonctions telles que la régulation de la température ambiante, la programmation d’horaires de fonctionnement ou encore un mode économique (réduction jusqu’à 40% de la consommation de gaz). Les foyers à gaz ouverts exigent une longueur minimum de conduit de 5 m de la sole foyère jusqu’au sommet de la souche et aucune clé de tirage n’est autorisée sur toute la longueur. Les foyers à gaz fermés ont des vitres hermétiques qui ne se « déclipsent » que pour la visite technique (1 fois/an). Les conduits à double paroi, « à ventouse », permettent d’évacuer les gaz brûlés et de faire pénétrer l’air extérieur. Ces conduits peuvent être coudés à 90° et sortir en façade des habitations. La mise en place de tous les foyers gaz doit impérativement être assurée par un installateur gaz agréé. De même, le chauffage au bois peut être considéré comme étant, avec le chauffage solaire, le moins polluant de la planète. Le soufre, grand responsable des pluies acides est, en effet, pratiquement absent de sa constitution. Pour parler simplement du cycle du gaz carbonique, on peut dire que les quantités de CO2 dégagées lors du pourrissement du bois sont identiques à celles dégagées lors de sa combustion. Ainsi, en aucune façon, le feu de bois domestique ne peut être rendu responsable de l’aggravation de « l’effet de serre » et donc du réchauffement climatique. On peut être assuré que la biomasse se place au rang des grandes sources d’énergie commercialisables du futur. Ces garanties, à l’exclusion des bris de verre, des pièces d’usure (joint, roulement) et des pièces réfractaires prennent effet à dater de la mise en fonctionnement du modèle et ce, pour une durée exceptionnelle de 5 ans. Les barbecues, les appareils à gaz insérés dans nos foyers ainsi que les modèles à l’éthanol végétal ont une garantie de 2 ans. -HIYPJH[PVUMYHUsHPZL Avec près de 60 % de ses ventes réalisées à travers le monde, Focus aurait pu faire le choix utilitariste et mercantile de délocaliser la production de ses cheminées dans des pays où les conditions sociales, salariales et environnementales sont nettement moins contraignantes qu’en France. Un transfert du siège historique de ses activités (Viols le Fort est un village médiéval au pied des Cévennes) vers une zone, à la périphérie de grandes villes, plus proche des moyens logistiques et des axes de communication, aurait également été possible. Des choix inverses et le maintien d’un ancrage territorial ont été privilégiés permettant ainsi la création progressive d’une quarantaine d’emplois dans une zone peu favorisée du Languedoc. Conscient de sa responsabilité économique, écologique et sociale, Focus a choisi, il y a une vingtaine d’années, de reprendre l’usine qui fabriquait l’ensemble de ses modèles dans le Sud de la France (Cavaillon), après une cessation d’activité de celle-ci. Dix emplois avaient été préservés, à ce jour, près d’une cinquantaine ont été créés sur ce site de fabrication, la société Théus. Des investissements très lourds viennent d’y être récemment réalisés avec son Directeur Général, Olivier Drouot. Due to the foreseeable depletion of fossil fuels, during recent years, we have been concentrating our efforts on the thermal efficiency of our fireplaces. Most of Focus wood fires, whether open or closed, having been examined by European testing laboratories, have a thermal efficiency greater than or equal to 70% and a rate of CO lower than 0,6 %. Bioethanol fires Focus is also extending its range with models equipped with bioethanol burners that have been specially adapted for certain fires. The modifications are made to the ceiling plates (which are blocked) and to the upper flues (some of which have air vents). The burner is integrated into the base of the hearth, replacing the wood grate. Where available, these variants are offered as options in our catalogue. Sustainable development Focus has always paid particular attention to the quality and the longevity of our fireplaces. For this reason, the materials we use are entirely recyclable, and the high standards we set for the design and production of our models allow us to guarantee them for a minimum of 5 years. Today, wood can be considered the best way to stock and restore, over several decades, solar energy. Creating heat by burning wood is, along with solar heating, among the least polluting for the planet. Sulphur, which is responsible for acid rain, is virtually absent in wood-burning. In terms of carbon dioxide gas, the amount of CO2 released from rotting wood is identical to that emitted when it is burned. So in no way can domestic wood fires be held responsible for increasing the greenhouse effect and global warming. It is certain that biomass will be among the principal commercial energy sources of the future. Evidence shows that wood energy, far from being a relic of the past, provides one path to a sustainable future. Documents With each fireplace, Focus supplies a User’s Guide, an Installation Guide and a Guide with detailed information on the model. These include: - general information on how the fireplaces work - explanatory notes on the various ways our models can be connected and adapted - important information about the model: for example, its thermal efficiency, level of CO emissions, smoke temperature, dimensions, recommended settings, safety standards and security instructions. An Installation Guide is included with the personalized installation plan. A copy can also be sent on request for those requiring more detailed technical information. Custom design Manufacturing the flues and connecting pieces to measure for each fireplace avoids as far as possible the need for complicated on-site installation, and means that many of our fireplaces can be simply assembled in place. By adapting our fireplaces to the various rules and regulations that exist in different countries, we now export more than 55% of our production to other members of the European Union, Eastern Europe, America and Asia. Personalized installation plan A personalized plan detailing installation information on one or more of our models can be supplied free on demand. You simply need to send us the relevant information (drawings, measurements, etc.) about where the fireplace will be situated. We will draw up a plan including costings, section drawings and descriptions that take into account the particular circumstances of the location, e.g. ceiling height, existing flues, thermal efficiency, etc. The plan is entirely free of charge and carries no obligation. 12/1/2018 144 Digital mock-up and Augmented Reality In addition to the above, Focus or its sales partners can provide a free digital mock-up of a Focus model in the setting of your choice, based on photographs of the room where you plan to install the fireplace. This is an excellent way to visualise how it will appear, and also to allow you to compare it with other models. The Focus creation app for smartphone or tablet can be downloaded free from Android or Apple online stores. This augmented reality application allows you to visualize any fireplace in the setting of your choice, indoors or outdoors. The fireplace automatically scales to fit the setting and requires no additional modification on your part (see pageour 157). Safety in use Our models have all undergone and passed rigorous testing and technical examination by the industrial experts whose responsibility it is to assess their safety in use. Since the inception of the Focus range in 1967, we know of no accident to person or property connected with their use for which we have been judged responsible. The information given in our Installation Guide has been approved by our insurers, AXA Insurance. Note: It is imperative that all models are installed according to the regulations and requirements in place in the country of installation. Standard equipment All of the components mentioned under “Characteristics” in this catalogue or detailed in the diagrams (other than those noted as options) are included as standard equipment in the purchase of the fireplace. In the case of fireplaces with vertical flues, the standard flue is supplied up to a ceiling height of 2.7 m (except Stofocus and Grappus); beyond this, an extra cost is payable by the metre. Guarantee Our firm is covered by an insurance policy conforming to the Directives of the Council of Europe. Après des études littéraires, à Londres et à Paris, études qualifiées par lui-même d'ambiguës voire d'équivoques, il se retrouve, dit-il, sans trop savoir pourquoi ni comment, ethnologue en Alaska, aide-cuisinier à Manhattan, docteur en sociologie en Sorbonne et professeur de Lettres dans un lycée parisien. Après 4 ans d'enseignement, il abandonne le tableau noir pour l'enclume et crée, en 1967, un atelier de sculptures en acier, au pied des Cévennes, à Viols-le-Fort, à 25 km au Nord de Montpellier. Privilégiant désormais le désarroi du métal à celui de la pensée, il martèle, forge, soude et sculpte… C'est là qu'il dessine sa première cheminée pour son usage personnel. Il la reproduit pour quelques personnes enthousiastes et c'est de cette façon, simplement, que commence Focus… Pour dominique imbert, dont le feutre ne dort que d’un oeil mais qui n’a jamais pris un cours de dessin de sa vie, il n’y a aucune hiérarchie à établir entre ses diverses activités. Il va ainsi allègrement de la création de sculptures en acier ou en bronze (dont quelques exemples sont présentés sur les pages suivantes) à la création d’objets, de meubles, de cheminées domestiques. D’une exigence rare envers la qualité de réalisation de ses créations, il tient, avec l’équipe exceptionnelle qui l’entoure, à en gérer l’édition. Ignorant superbement les modes, ce sculpteur-designer atypique cherche avant tout à répondre à ses intuitions : « C’est ce que je fais qui m’apprend ce que je cherche », confie-t-il. « Ce qui m’intéresse, c’est ce qui m’émeut et ce qui m’émeut c’est de découvrir, cachés au fin fond de certaines formes, un clin d’oeil de la matière, une vie intérieure, une âme. C’est dans celle-ci qu’on trouve vraiment autre chose que cette espèce d’algèbre froide et conventionnelle qui fait notre environnement. J’ai un immense plaisir à faire cracher un sens aux formes, un sens clandestin, une poésie. » « Sans poésie on existe sans vivre », poursuit ce littéraire. Mais est-ce le même homme qui va remporter au Japon des marchés de près de 760 000 Euros, face à des sociétés canadiennes ou allemandes de dimensions autrement supérieures ? Est-ce le même homme qui, en partenariat et refusant la délocalisation, reprend l’usine qui fabriquait ses modèles, créant ainsi au total près de 100 emplois directs et indirects, qui exporte plus de la moitié de ses créations aussi bien en Lituanie qu’en Russie, aussi bien aux USA qu’en Australie ? Alors, designer autodidacte ? soixante-huitard reconverti ? forgeron sociologue ? chef d’entreprise mutant ? artiste humaniste ? Si on le presse de se définir, cet homme, au cheminement singulier, se contente de citer avec un sourire énigmatique et sibyllin, cette phrase de Le Corbusier : « la tradition consiste à créer son époque... » Et voilà... After studying literature in London and Paris, he became, “by accident”, as he puts it, an ethnologist in Alaska and an assistant chef in Manhattan, before being awarded a Doctorate in Sociology at the Sorbonne and becoming a literature professor in a Paris Lycée. After teaching for four years, he decided he preferred shaping metal to moulding young minds, and in 1967, he set up a workshop making steel sculptures in the village of Viols-le-Fort in the garrigue north of Montpellier. It was at this studio that he designed his first fireplace for his own personal use, then repeated the exercise for others who fell in love with what he had created ... and this was how Focus began. This self-taught sculptor-designer moves easily between his many passions, creating bronze and steel sculptures (some of which are shown on the following pages) as well as fireplaces and furniture. The thread that unites all his creations is his insistence on quality, a pursuit shared by the exceptional team that works with him. In order to attain the quality he demands, Focus runs the production and distribution of all their products, and in the face of outsourcing has chosen to support the local production sites of their fireplaces. For this free-spirited artist, the independence to follow intuition rather than convention or trend is his guiding force: “What interests me is discovering and shaping the poetry and spirit of an object,” he says. Yet this artist has also negotiated million dollar contracts in Japan, exports fireplaces to markets from Lithuania to Russia, Australia to Israel, and is directly or indirectly responsible for some 80 jobs. Mais tout le monde savait déjà, sans doute, que ce sont les inventeurs de mots, les inventeurs de feux, et les poètes qui ont créé l’univers. Conscient de sa responsabilité économique, écologique et sociale, Focus a choisi, il y a une vingtaine d’années, de reprendre, après une cessation de son activité, cette usine qui fabriquait déjà l’ensemble de ses modèles dans le sud de la France. Dix emplois avaient été préservés. À ce jour, près d’une cinquantaine y ont été créés et de très importants investissements viennent récemment d’y être réalisés. Avec ce rachat, il s’agissait pour dominique imbert à la fois de témoigner sa reconnaissance à ceux qui ont su prendre des risques à ses côtés, et d’assurer la pérennité de son indépendance. Du même coup, il transformait la modeste manufacture en une usine qui fabrique à présent pour la Russie et le Brésil, pour l’Australie et l’Amérique du Nord. Une question – inéluctable : les coûts salariaux en France permettront-ils de maintenir longtemps ce refus d’une délocalisation ? L’USINE DE FABRICATION / THE PRODUCTION SITE 12/1/2018 155 Focus fireplaces are made at the Cavaillon production site in the south of France. Mindful of its economic, social and environmental responsibility, some 20 years ago Focus chose to take over the metal workshop that produced all its fireplaces after it ceased operations, saving ten jobs. Today, Cavaillon employs nearly 50 people, and major investments have recently been made to improve its operational capabilities. For dominique imbert, this takeover was both a way to show his appreciation to those who had supported him in riskier times, as well as to ensure his continued independence. His decision would transform the small workshop into a factory that today produces fireplaces for customers from Russia to Brazil and Australia to North America.
