NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING
CASE #93-2
KENTUCKY FRIED CHICKEN
BEFORE THE CITY OF ASPEN BOARD OF ADJUSTMENT
TO ALL PROPERTY OWNERS AFFECTED BY THE REQUESTED ZONING OR USE
VARIANCE DESCRIBED BELOW:
Pursuant to the Official Code of Aspen of June 25, 1962, as
amended, a public hearing will be held in the Council Room, City
Hall, Aspen, Colorado, (or at such other place as the meeting may
be then adjourned) to consider an application filed with the said
Board of Adjustment requesting authority for variance from the
provisions of the Zoning Ordinance, Chapter 24, Official Code of
Aspen. All persons affected by the proposed variance are invited
to appear and state their views, protests or objections. If you
cannot appear personally at such meeting, you are urged to state
your views by letter, particularly if you have objection to such
variance,' as the Board of Adjustment will give serious
consideration to the opinions-of.surrounding property owners and
others affected in deciding whether to grant or deny the request
for variance.
Particulars of the hearing and requested variance are as follows:
Date and Time of Meeting:
Date: MARCH 18, 1993
Time: 4:00 p.m.

Name: KENTUCKY FRIED CHICKEN
Address: 435 EAST MAIN STREET
Location or description of property:

Sign Variance -- KFC Aspen n
The existing sign at the main entrance to KFC measures 12" x 10' or 10 sq. ft.,overall
The proposed sign will measure 14J" x 8'1 3/8" or 9.82 sq. ft. overall.
Maximum allowance for all letters is 12", except for the first letter in each
word, which may be 18" (Sec 5-408 A)
Under the code the new sign would be allowed to have the "K" in "KFC" be 18" and
the "F &'C" would have to be 12". We propose that all letters be equal at a
height of 14P, in order to be able to utilize our standardized logo format.
Maximum logo length allowance is 18", our proposed graphics portion of our logo
would be 48.75", however the overall sign volume impact would be just under 10 sq. ft.
as outlined above.
Any changes to our standardized logo sign would necessitate reducing the overall
sign, as it is not possible to reduce one or another aspect of it. The overall
sign impact is actually reduced in volume by this new proposed sign. (20 letters
reduced to 3).
Any reduction of our overall sign would render it unreadable, inasmuch the store
front is set back from the street sidewalk 40 to 50 feet. This would undoubtedly
cause an undue hardship on the business due to its obscured location to begin
with.
In summary, our request is as follows:
#1 - To allow letters "KFC" to be 14J" in height, as outlined above, and
per the drawing specification.
#2 - To allow a variance of the width of the graphics portion of the logo
so as to conform with our corporate standard, as outlined in the
drawing specification.
