RE: Roof Deck Addition and New Mudroom Door/Window
Styslinger Remodel – 203 E Hallam, Aspen, Colorado 81611
Seth,
As requested, we have reviewed the architectural drawing A3.1, received via email on June 11, 2018 for
structural implications of the proposed roof deck on the existing roof and the new door and window at the
mudroom at the above site. The new door and window at the mudroom will fit within the existing rough
opening width on the west wall of the mudroom. Infill frame with 2x6 @ 16”o.c. around new openings as
needed with a minimum of two studs between the new window and door.
The roof deck is proposed to be 2x wood decking over 2x wood sleepers and is specified to cover a portion of
the east end of the flat roof area in the middle of the home. The deck is intended to be placed approximately
between grids 2 and 3 and grids B and C as noted on sheet A3.1 referenced above. The new roof deck is
proposed to be accessed through a new roof hatch of approximately 3’ x 8’ in size and located to the north of
grid 3 between grids A and B, in an existing closet behind the stairs.
The new roof hatch is to be cut into the roof framing in the bay defined above and shall be framed out with
(2) 14” (2.0E) LVLs typical at its edges. The new LVL beam on the east side of the opening shall bear on the
wall to the north and hang off the existing beam at grid 3 in an HU412 Simspon hanger. Provide IUS hangers
to support cut rafters at edge of new opening and HU412 hangers at new framing beam to beam
connections. The contractor shall temporarily shore the roof framing during construction as needed.
As outlined above, the existing roof structure of 14” TJI 360 @ 16”o.c., or equal, is sufficient to support the
new roof deck. Should you have any further questions or require any additional information regarding this
matter, please contact our office.
Sincerely,
