It is our understanding that, at times, polyurethane foam insulations are requested to be used over the surface of CAFCO SFRMs applied to steel deck, beam and column substrates. The BXUV.GuideInfo – Fire-resistance Ratings - ANSI/UL 263 portion of the UL Fire Resistance Directory indicates the following: “Unless otherwise noted in the individual designs or certifications, the application of sprayed polyurethane foam or other insulation over sprayed fire-resistive materials (SFRM) or intumescent fire-resistive materials (IFRM) coatings has not been investigated.” Please be advised that Isolatek International does not have any experience with the compatibility of CAFCO SFRMs with a topcoat of polyurethane foam insulations; however we have been informed that this application has been successfully installed on past projects. It is suggested that the polyurethane foam insulation being used be classified as Class I or Class II rated when evaluated in accordance with ANSI/UL 723 (ASTM E84 and NFPA 255) in accordance with the Model Building Code. Furthermore, the application must be controlled so that the coating does not influence the bond between the SFRM and the steel substrate. The SFRM must be fully cured prior to the application of the polyurethane foam over the surface of the SFRM. Refer to the polyurethane foam manufacturer regarding fire characteristics of the foam and for any further information concerning historical adhesion characteristics to Applied Fireproofing products. Additionally, if required, all Model Building Code requirements for the use of a Thermal or Ignition Barrier must be followed. It is also suggested that a mock-up sample of this application be conducted to determine if the adhesion characteristics of the coating over the CAFCO SFRM. Isolatek International shall not be liable for any special, indirect, or consequential damages arising from the installation of the polyurethane foams over the surface of SFRMs. Authorities having jurisdiction must be consulted in all cases where approval is to be obtained for all thicknesses that fall outside the scope of UL or design guidelines.
