Memorandum
To Dave Rybak/Rybak Architecture&Development
From Craig Biere, PE
Date January 12, 2022
Re Los Montanas
We have been asked to review the existing roof framing for the additional weight of 2 Make-up Air Units as
located on sheet A-101 prepared by Rybak Architecture SL Development. Both Make-up Air Units have an
approximate footprint of 96"x 65" and a maximum weight of 2,659 pounds.
At MAU 1, a new 3-2x12 floor beam must be added spanning north and south below the east and west
sides of the unit. The south end of the beams must bear on the existing exterior wall and the north ends
must be connected to the existing GL beam with HU212-3 hangers. The existing 5 1/8"x 161/2" GL
beam at the north end of the new beam has been reviewed for the additional load of the unit and it still
exceeds the code requirements for both stress and deflection. The new load results in less than a 5%
change from the existing column loads at each end of the GL beam, and have not been reviewed per IEBC
section 807.4, exception 1.
At MAU-2, a new 3-2x12 floor beam must be added spanning east and west below the north and south
sides of the unit. The west end of the new beams must bear on the existing exterior wall and the east ends
must be connected to the GL with HU212-3 hangers. The existing 5 1/8"x 161/2" GL beam at the east end
of the new beam has been reviewed for the additional load of the unit and it still exceeds the code
requirements for both stress and deflection. The new load results in less than a 5%change from the
existing column loads at each end of the GL beam, and have not been reviewed per IEBC section 807.4,
exception 1.
Where the new 3-2x12 beams bear on an existing exterior wall, the center of the new beam must bear
within 1" of the center of an existing cold formed metal stud. The builder has verified the existing studs to
be 1 5/8"x 5 1/2"x 16 gauge metal studs with a 1 1/4"x 5 1/2"x 18 gauge metal track on top of the studs.
There is an existing single 2x6 plate on top of the metal track which the roof joists are fastened to. The
single metal stud is acceptable to support the load of the new 3-2x12 and the single wood plate and metal
track are sufficient to transfer the load to the top of the metal stud.
Thank you for the opportunity to assist you with this project. Please contact us if you have any questions.
