PART 1 -GENERAL
1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS
A. None.
1.2 SUMMARY
A. This Section includes the following:
1. Steel door frames.
1.3 SUBMITTALS
A. Shop Drawings showing fabrication and installation of steel doors and frames. Include details of each
frame type, elevations of door design types, conditions at openings, details of construction, location and
installation requirements of door and frame hardware and reinforcements, and details of joints and con-
nections. Show anchorage and accessory items.
1.4 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Provide frames complying with the Steel Door Institute Standard ANSI A250.8-1998 (SDI 100) "Rec-
ommended Specifications for Standard Steel Doors and Frames"and as specified.
PART 2-PRODUCTS
2.1 MANUFACTURERS
A. Available Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements, manufacturers offering products
that may be incorporated in the Work include,but are not limited to,the following:

1.5 MATERIALS
B. Cold-Rolled Steel Sheet: ASTM A 1008/A 1008M,CS,Type B; suitable for exposed applications.
C. Hot-Rolled Steel Sheet: ASTM A 1011/A 1011M,CS,Type B.
D. Metallic-Coated Steel Sheet: ASTM A 653/A 653M, Commercial Steel (CS), Type B; with minimum
G60(Z180)or A60(ZF180)metallic coating.
E. Frame Anchors: ASTM A 591/A 591M, Commercial Steel (CS), 40Z (12G) coating designation; mill
phosphatized.
1. For anchors built into exterior walls, steel sheet complying with ASTM A 1008/A 1008M or
ASTM A 1011/A 1011M,hot-dip galvanized according to ASTM A 153/A 153M,Class B.

F. Inserts,Bolts,and Fasteners: Hot-dip galvanized according to ASTM A 153/A 153M.
G. Grout: ASTM C 476, except with a maximum slump of 4 inches (102 mm), as measured according to
ASTM C 143/C 143M.
H. Bituminous Coating: Cold-applied asphalt mastic, SSPC-Paint 12, compounded for 15-mil (0.4-mm)
dry film thickness per coat.
2.2 FRAMES
A. Provide metal frames for doors, transoms, sidelights, borrowed lights, and other openings, according to
ANSI/SDI 100,and of types and styles as shown on drawings and schedules. Conceal fastenings,unless
otherwise indicated. Fabricate frames of minimum 0.0598-inch-(1.5-mm-)thick cold-rolled steel sheet.
1. Fabricate frames with mitered and caulked welded corners.
2. Interior frames for wood doors: 14 gauge galvanized steel sheet.
B. Plaster Guards: Provide minimum 0.0179-inch-(0.45-mm-)thick steel plaster guards or mortar boxes at
back of hardware cutouts where mortar or other materials might obstruct hardware operation and to close
off interior of openings.
C. Grout: Solid grout all jambs and heads of frames in contact with masonry construction
2.3 FABRICATION
A. Fabricate steel frame units to be rigid,neat in appearance,and free from defects,warp,or buckle. Where
practical,fit and assemble units in manufacturer's plant. Clearly identify work that cannot be permanent-
ly factory assembled before shipment, to assure proper assembly at Project site. Comply with ANSI
A250.8-1998(SDI 100)requirements.
1. Internal Construction: One of the following manufacturer's standard core materials according to
SDI standards:
a. Resin-impregnated paper honeycomb.
b. Rigid polyurethane conforming to ASTM C 591.
c. Rigid polystyrene conforming to ASTM C 578.
d. Vertical steel stiffeners.
e. Rigid mineral fiber with internal sound deadener on inside of face sheets.
2. Clearances: Not more than 1/8 inch(3.2 mm)at jambs and heads, except not more than 1/4 inch
(6.4 mm)between non-fire-rated pairs of doors. Not more than 3/4 inch(19 mm)at bottom.
3. Fire Doors: Provide clearances according to NFPA 80.
B. Tolerances: Comply with SDI 117 "Manufacturing Tolerances Standard Steel Doors and Frames."
C. Fabricate concealed stiffeners,reinforcement, edge channels, louvers, and moldings from either cold-or
hot-rolled steel sheet.
D. Exposed Fasteners: Unless otherwise indicated, provide countersunk flat or oval heads for exposed
screws and bolts.
E. Sound-Rated(Acoustical)Assemblies: Where shown or scheduled, provide door and frame assemblies
fabricated as sound-reducing type, tested according to ASTM E 1408, and classified according to
ASTM E 413.
1. Unless otherwise indicated,provide acoustical assemblies with STC sound ratings of 33 or better.

F. Hardware Preparation: Prepare doors and frames to receive mortised and concealed hardware according
to final door hardware schedule and templates provided by hardware supplier. Comply with applicable
requirements of SDI 107 and ANSI A115 Series specifications for door and frame preparation for hard-
ware.
1. For concealed overhead door closers, provide space, cutouts, reinforcing, and provisions for fas-
tening in top rail of doors or head of frames,as applicable.
G. Reinforce frames to receive surface-applied hardware. Drilling and tapping for surface-applied hardware
may be done at Project site.
H. Locate hardware as indicated on Shop Drawings or, if not indicated, according to the Door and Hard-
ware Institute's (DHI) "Recommended Locations for Architectural Hardware for Standard Steel Doors
and Frames."
2.4 FINISHES,GENERAL
A. Comply with NAAMM's "Metal Finishes Manual" for recommendations relative to applying and desig-
nating finishes.
B. Comply with SSPC-PA 1, "Paint Application Specification No. 1,"for steel sheet finishes.
C. Apply primers and organic finishes to doors and frames after fabrication.
2.5 STEEL SHEET FINISHES
A. Surface Preparation: Solvent-clean surfaces to comply with SSPC-SP 1 to remove dirt, oil, grease, and
other contaminants that could impair paint bond. Remove mill scale and rust, if present, from uncoated
steel to comply with SSPC-SP 5 (White Metal Blast Cleaning)or SSPC-SP 8(Pickling).
B. Pretreatment: Immediately after surface preparation,apply a conversion coating of type suited to organ-
ic coating applied over it.
C. Factory Priming for Field-Painted Finish: Apply shop primer that complies with ANSI A224.1 ac-
ceptance criteria,is compatible with finish paint systems indicated,and has capability to provide a sound
foundation for field-applied topcoats. Apply primer immediately after surface preparation and pretreat-
ment.
PART 3 -EXECUTION
3.1 INSTALLATION
A. General: Install steel doors, frames, and accessories according to Shop Drawings, manufacturer's data,
and as specified.
B. Placing Frames: Comply with provisions of SDI 105,unless otherwise indicated. Set frames accurately
in position,plumbed, aligned,and braced securely until permanent anchors are set. After wall construc-
tion is completed,remove temporary braces and spreaders,leaving surfaces smooth and undamaged.
1. Except for frames located in existing concrete,masonry, or gypsum board assembly construction,
place frames before constructing enclosing walls and ceilings.

2. In metal-stud partitions,install at least 3 wall anchors per jamb at hinge and strike levels. In steel-
stud partitions,attach wall anchors to studs with screws.
3. Install fire-rated frames according to NFPA 80.
