Variance Request
Dear City of Aspen Engineering:
This memo addresses Civil Engineering aspects of the proposed pool deck remodel at 800 S Monarch
Street in the City of Aspen and is intended to request a variance for the project with the City of Aspen
Engineering Department. The drainage approach is proposing a drywell to treat water quality. Instead of
a standard 10' deep drywell, a 5' deep drywell is to be installed. Based on the property and building
setbacks, a 10' deep drywell would be problematic for the existing pool and retaining wall.
In general, we propose a drywell with modifications to encourage safe and effective construction while
preserving existing elements on site. The proposed location of the drywell meets the 10' setback distance
to the property lines. The distance from the drywell to the closest building is 10' to the nearest edge. A
combination of the setbacks as well as the proximity to the pool and existing retaining wall, a 10' plus
excavation for a standard drywell seems problematic and could cause more damage to the existing
infrastructure.Because of the proximity to the existing pool, SGM feels comfortable, that the drywell poses
minimal risk to the pool and retaining wall at an excavation depth of 5'. To further protect the pool,we are
proposing to only perforate the sides of the drywell that are pointed away from the pool, adding an
additional layer of protection for the pool, as well as backfill of washed gravel only on the perforated side,
backfilling with fine gravels or road base on the pool side, add to the encouragement of directing infiltration
away from the existing pool.
We hope this memo is enough for the variance approval for the development of this site. Please feel free
to contact us if we may provide further information or clarification.
Respectfully,
