Section includes: 1. Wood Fence Type 1 2. Wood Fence Type 2 3. Wood Fence Gate 1.2 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS A. Structural Performance: Fence and Gate shall withstand the effects of gravity loads and the following loads and stresses within limits and under conditions indicated: a. Uniform load of 50 lbf/ft. applied in any direction. b. Concentrated load of 200 lbf applied in any direction. c. Uniform and concentrated loads need not be assumed to act concurrently. B. Thermal Movements: Allow for thermal movements from ambient and surface temperature changes acting on exterior wood fabrications by preventing buckling, opening of joints, overstressing of components, failure of connections, and other detrimental effects. 1.3 ACTION SUBMITTALS A. Shop Drawings: Provide signed and sealed shop drawings from the Contractor's Structural Engineer, including plans, elevations, sections, details, and attachments to other work. Include finishing and sizing of lumber and boards used B. Product Data: 1. Wood materials 2. Wood stain 3. Metal fastening and gate hardware C. Samples for Initial Selection: 1. Wood materials 2. Applied wood stain color 3. Metal fastening and gate hardware 1.4 INFORMATIONAL SUBMITTALS 1. Material Certificates a. For lumber specified to comply with minimum allowable unit stresses. Indicate species and grade selected for each use and design values approved by ALSC's Board of Review b. Mockups: Build mockups to verify selections made under sample submittals and to demonstrate aesthetic effects and set quality standards for fabrication and installation. Mockups shall include Picket Fence Gate and 8' Max. section of Picket Fence. 1. Samples shall be reworked as required to obtain a satisfactory finish. 1.6 PROJECT CONDITIONS A. Field Measurements: Verify actual locations of walls and other construction contiguous with fence railings by field measurements before fabrication and indicate measurements on Shop Drawings. PART 2—PRODUCTS 2.1 WOOD FENCE TYPE 1 &2 A. Description: Boards attached to wooden posts B. Material:No. 2 Grade Cedar in accordance with National Grading Rule for Dimension Lumber, Surfaced(S4S). C. Primer: Acrylic wood primer on dry,sanded surface. D. Finish: White acrylic latex paint. E. Size: As described in drawings. 2.2 PICKET FENCE-GATE A. Description: Boards attached to wooden posts. B. Material:No. 2 Grade Cedar in accordance with National Grading Rule for Dimension Lumber, Surfaced(S4S). C. Color: Contractor to coordinate with Landscape Architect to determine final stain color. D. Size: As described in drawings. 2.3 PRESERVATION TREATMENT A. Preservation Chemicals: Acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction. 1. Do not use chemicals containing arsenic or chromium. Use process for boards and dimension lumber that does not include water repellents or other substances that might interfere with application of indicated finishes. C. Application: Treat all wood unless otherwise indicated. PART 3 -EXECUTION 3.1 EXAMINATION A. Examine substrates and conditions,with Installer present, for compliance with requirements for installation tolerances and other conditions affecting performance of the Work. B. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected. 3.2 PREPARATION A. Clean substrates of projections and substances detrimental to application. B. Seal wood, including both faces and edges. Cut to required lengths and seal ends. 3.3 INSTALLATION, GENERAL A. Set work to required levels and lines,with members plumb,true to line, cut, and fitted. Fit work to other construction; scribe and cope as needed for accurate fit. B. Framing Standard: Comply with ASTM F537 unless otherwise indicated. C. Secure pickets to framing with screws. D. Sort and select lumber so that natural characteristics do not interfere with installation or with fastening other materials to lumber. Do not use materials with defects that interfere with func- tion of members or pieces that are too small to use with minimum number of joints or opti- mum joint arrangement.
