Re 134 E Bleeker
Dear HPC Staff and Board,
Thank you for your public comment consideration.
The appeal of much of Aspen is the maintenance of
Victorian houses and landscapes for which HPC is to be
credited. Its policies and guidelines have been critical to the
West End maintaining its historical character over the last
forty years.
-We are asking the Board to continue to uphold this
landscape aesthetic by insisting on the maintenance of the
wrought iron fence presently surrounding the designated
Victorian.
Wrought iron fences, with peonies, delphinium and sweet
peas, were the preferred landscape of the West End. This
fence is part of the context of this streetscape and the
surrounding blocks, as is noted when walking the
neighbourhood. As per Guidelines 1.1 and 1.7 as well as
1.11, the fence is an essential element of Victorian
landscape aesthetic.
-The now-proposed picket fence creates further confusion as
it interfaces with the horizontal contemporary fencing; the
picket fence option itself lacks transparency and is out of
character with the property. as per guideline 1.19
-Historic patterns in the West End were walkways leading to
the front door with out buildings and alley access as
secondary entries. It is important to maintain this pattern and
request the applicant to make the Bleeker St entry the
clearly primary and used entry. The large secondary entry on
Aspen street detracts significantly from the perception of the
public to enjoy the Victorian, as per Guidelines 1.6, 4.1. The
large side walkway makes the newer addition appear as the
entry, not the connector, as per Guideline 10.9
-We are glad to see the accommodation of the required two
parking spaces as required by code and hope they will be
used as such.
Respectfully,
Howie Mallory
