DB DOUBLE-HUNG WINDOW
03-2 COMPANY CONFIDENTIAL – REVISION AA-01
RENEWAL BY ANDERSEN SPECIFICATION & TECHNICAL MANUAL DB DOUBLE-HUNG WINDOW
The DB Double-Hung window consists of two vertically sliding sash in a single frame. The upper and lower sash are counterbal-
anced by a spring powered block-and-tackle balancer mounted on the side of each sash. Tilt latches for each sash allow inward
tilting for easy cleaning. When locked, a cam-type sash lock securely closes the upper and lower sash and seats them snugly
into their weatherstrip systems.
ADVANTAGES:
• Upper and lower sash can be operated for ventilation.
• Upper and lower sash tilt inward for safe and easy cleaning.
• Surfaces on the sash and frame are designed with smooth
radii which are visually pleasing and easier to clean.
• Mortise-and-tenon appearance on the interior and exterior
sash corners provides a traditional, hand-crafted look.
• Full-perimeter weatherstrip provides superior weather tight-
ness while allowing easy sash operation.
• Sash are counter-balanced by a spring-powered block-and-
tackle balancer mounted on the side of each sash. Each
balancer is uniquely configured and engineered for that
exact sash size and weight which minimizes operating force.
• Corner keys provide durable, watertight corners.
APPLICATIONS:
• Homes and condominiums where traditional styling is
important; appropriate for many restoration projects.
• Sash do not project outward, making them suitable for areas
facing walkways, decks and other exterior traffic areas.
• Convenient in areas where the sash need to be cleaned from
the interior. No need for ladders in hard to reach locations.
• Visually compatible with other full frame and
insert frame picture / specialty window prod ucts.

FRAME OPTIONS AND APPLICATIONS
The DB Double-Hung is available with two frame types.
The two options are Full-Frame and Insert Frame. The
insert frame option is available with two different sill
configurations. A 14° sloped sill is available for insert
applications where the existing window sill is angled
to the exterior and a flat sill for use in other applications.
Full Frame
The full-frame DB Double-Hung window is the ideal choice for
a Full Frame application. The interior of the window contains
an extension jamb (EJ) kerf to accept an extension jamb. The
exterior perimeter of the window frame can be fitted with a
nailing flange OR multiple configurations of brick mould.
Insert Frame
An Insert Frame consists of a notched outer frame member
that nests itself against the exterior sash stop of an existing
3-1/4” jamb pocket, and a CLOSED interior frame profile.
The Insert Frame is available with both the Sloped Sill and
Flat Sill.
Insert Frame - Sill Options
The DB Insert Double-Hung is available with two different sill
options. If the existing window frame has a sloped sill of 8
degrees or greater, it is recommended to use a Sloped-Sill
configuration. This will maximize the replacement window’s
clear glass height as the sill on the new window is “sloped”
at a 14 degree angle. However, the sill is void of an exterior
kerf on the outer nose. The window, therefore, does not allow
for attachment of accessories at the sill, such as L-Trim or
aluminum coil. Additionally, a DB Double-Hung with a Sloped
Sill cannot be configured with ANY exterior trim components
such as brick mould or overfit.
If the existing window frame has a sill with a slope of
less than 8 degrees, it is recommended to use a Flat-
Sill configuration. The Flat-Sill will seat better in these
applications with minimal shimming required. Additionally,
the Flat-Sill contains an exterior kerf to provide increased
flexibility with exterior trim components or coil stock AND
can be configured with brick mould or overfit systems. The
Flat-Sill is also the appropriate selection when specifying
a DB Double-Hung used in a bay/bow frame OR when mulled
next to an Insert Picture/Specialty window (PW/SW).
The Insert Frame consists of a 3-3/16” frame dimension
which is ideal for nesting inside of an existing old dou-
ble-hung jamb pocket (insert application).
Factory applied exterior trim options
are available for Full Frames. They are
NOT available on Insert Frames.

SLOPED SILL UNIT HEIGHT ADJUSTMENTS
Sloped Sill Unit Height Adjustments
When a sloped sill is desired, it is important to evaluate
the EXISTING sill angle to which the new window will be
resting upon. If the EXISTING sill angle is less than 14
degrees, a unit height deduction WILL BE MADE AT THE
FACTORY to prevent interference. The chart below iden-
tifies what deductions WILL BE MADE AT THE FACTORY
based on the sill angle you identify on the order. The sill
angle will NOT CHANGE on the DB Double-Hung window
you are ordering. It will always be 14 degrees on a sloped
sill configuration.

Interior Stool Height Requirements
It is important to evaluate the EXISTING sill angle and
EXISTING stool height. If the existing sill angle is less
than 14 degrees, a gap will exist between the new sill
and existing sill. The previous chart identifies the resultant
gap height that must be hidden by an interior stool/stop.

A variety of hardware options and finishes are
available for the DB Double-Hung window. Please see
the Color Combination Options page for default
hardware colors per interior color.
Hand Lift
A hand lift is available in all of the interior hardware colors
and finishes with factory drilled mounting holes on the
tall-bottom-rail. One OR two hand lifts may be specified;
however, units less than 23" wide are limited to one facto-
ry drilled hand lift. Hand lift hardware may be field applied.
Lock and Keeper
The lock and keeper components are manufactured from
durable zinc die cast material, providing maximum secu-
rity. When actuated, the lock cam engages easily into the
keeper and drives the sash into the head and sill weath-
erstrip resulting in a tight barrier between the sash and
frame.
• All standard DB Double-Hung units greater than 45-
9/16" wide are manufactured with two locks.
• All other units will be manufactured with one lock.
If an additional lock is desired, single lock units can
be ordered with a second lock. However, DB Double-
Hung units less than 22-13/16" wide can NOT be or-
dered with two locks.

CALCULATIONS
Due to the complexity of the DB Double-Hung design
and advanced performance characteristics, limited
sash travel and egress sizes may vary.
Limited Sash Travel Restrictions
Based on Unit Type and Sizes
All Renewal by Andersen® DB double-hung windows are indi-
vidually engineered to optimize performance, operation and
aesthetics. This includes each and every sash in the win-
dow assembly which are counter-balanced by a coil-spring
powered block and tackle balancer system mounted into the
side of the sash. Each balancer is uniquely configured and
engineered for that exact sash considering its size, weight
and aspect ratio with the goal of minimizing the opening and
closing force required for that given window. As a result,
some window configurations may have sash travel that is
limited. This is purposefully done to allow the counter-bal-
ance-system to assist with maintaining operating forces
much lower than typical
double-hung windows.

Steps to Calculate a Desired Value
Step 1 Select appropriate chart from left (Upper Sash
Height, Lower Sash Height or Check Rail Height).
Step 2: Find desired sash ratio in left-most column and
make note of appropriate Sill Constant (Sloped or
Flat) and Multiplier from the chart.
Step 3: Input your known Unit Height and the noted values
from Step 2 into the formula from the Header from
the desired chart. Calculate results.

DB Double-Hung Mull (Joined) Combinations
Available Factory Joined Combinations
Stack, ribbon and two-way configurations must conform to factory mulling (joining) guidelines.
Please reference the Product Overview and Technical Data manuals for details.
Mulling (Joining) Considerations and Recommendations:
• Mulling a double-hung unit over any other unit is not recommended.
• The DB Double-Hung Flat Sill kerf will align with the kerf on the Insert Picture Window sill kerf. Necessary installation
procedures must be made to address if necessary when sloped sill inserts are specified.
• DB Double-Hung units with grilles mulled to any other full frame or insert frame frame product with grilles will result in
misalignment of the horizontal grille bars between the two units. If true alignment is necessary, an NSPR can be submitted
to adjust the horizontal bar spacing to achieve alignment.
