Re: Gorsuch Haus Development Application
Members of the Aspen City Council:
Gorsuch Haus is an effort to revitalize the area where skiing began in Aspen — on South Aspen Street This
neighborhood and mountain portal has incredible potential to honor and celebrate the history of this great town. The
idea of the Gorsuch Haus Project has been to create a ski hotel to provide hospitality and visitor amenities, pro%iding
community benefits as the gateway onto the Aspen mountain. The vision described in the Application is a iision that
honors and continues the legacy of Aspen's original base area.
There has been great value from the review, input and recommendations of the Planning and Zoning Commission.
However, while that process suggested a direction, there are many intertwining aspects of the neighborhood, skiing
connections, site characteristics, and program elements that will benefit from Council input to help us refine the project.
It is our goal to find the best fit between the community and the project which we truly believe is the right use for the
top of South Aspen Street.
The Gorsuch Haus team understands that a final design must reflect appropriate mass and scale for the neighborhood,
and we are prepared to meet that goal. The project should also respect the mountain %view planes and environment, and
should welcome the public while not overshadowing the presence of the lift and mountain arrival. Respectfully, we need
Council direction regarding specific adjustments to the Application to create a project that is right for the community
and for Aspen's future. We are hopeful that this can occur with Council's review of the project and want to communicate
the willingness of Gorsuch Haus team to engage with Council, in a constructive discussion about the planning and
nature of the project.
We want to provide Aspen with a hotel at the base of Lift 1A. It must be a project that we all can be proud of; that
complements this important, historic site; and that will welcome the community onto the mountain.
Thank you for your time, consideration, and comments.
