MINUTES OF MAY 18, 1994
WINE CLASSIC
Tom Hines, ACRA: We are on the agenda for the Aspen Food & Wine
Classic 1994 and the dates are Friday June 17th through June 19th.
We have applied for the parks and use permit, special events
permit, the city vending permit, the special event liquor license
with the dept. of revenue, health dept. tax exemption and trade
name registration, the city of aspen combined sales tax and
business license and have received approval for all.
Taylor: Do you have a barbecue permit.
Tom: You can do it as long as it is not more than three days in
a row.
Bill: I thought you had to apply for a permit and they would log
you in.
Jon: In the past at least one member on the board voted against
the event because of the competition. My only concern are their
changes that impact the mall itself.
Tom: It is not part of the CCLC but the Silver Circle will be
tented this year and there will be a cooking seminar there.
Jen: I always hoped that site would be active at different times
of the year.
Tom: I will give an over view of the food and wine classic. It
is a three day event put on by the city and the ACRA in Cooperation
with American Express and Food & Wine Magazine. We feed 3,000
people four times a day in the tasting tent with imported meets,
fishes, pastas with different countries represented. There is an
italian tent, fish tent and all are preparing different types of
good. Some of those use outdoor grills.
Warren: It is so expensive to ge to this thing.
Tom: It is $%00. for three days. Some ef the logistics are fun,
we will be washing dishes at 12,000 per hour. There will be 41,000
bottles of wine. It has not increased in size but is the #1 wine
classic of the world. 650 volunteers make it possible.
Jack: What was the stance of the Restaurant Association regarding
the Food & Wine?
Bill: Absolutely 100% backed. The Restaurant Association is even
taking on sending out the invitations for the dinner party.
Jack: I went back and checked my figures and we had an increase
COM/~ERCIAL CORE & LODGING COM~ISSION MINUTES OF MAY 18, 1994
during the food and wine classic.
Bill: Are the tickets sold out yet?
Tom: The cap is 1¥00 tickets and we are at 1532. For every paid
guest there is one employee which actually makes 3200 people. It
involves the town.
Bill: Will we be flying people to Eagle and bussing them over
here?
Tom: Yes.
Jori: Is there something the town is doing to cut the service back
on the airlines?
Tom: I feel the town is allowing this to take place without
putting some sort of undo pressure on governmental bodies that have
the capability to change it. We are loosing our ability to have
direct flights because we don't have the capability of landing
aircraft at this airport. Eagle will have 17 additional flights
next year.
Warren: Why can't a local have a better rate to go to the wine
fair? $400. is steep for a lot of people.
Tom: Yes it is.
Warren: I have heard complaints that people get run out of town
by out of towners and locals do not get a chance. $800. a couple
most people can't afford.
Tom: I totally concur and I think that is the reason that we have
extended three things: 1) a small wine tasting and luncheon at the
Jerome for $15. for locals which is excellent. The volunteers 650
people not paying $400. and third we will offer as we have in the
past a one day pass for locals which would cost $200.
Warren: I have missed something here.
Tom: I concur with you and it is like the commuter ticket at the
airlines.
Warren: The city pays part of this right?
Tom: They put in $15,000 of budgeted money in.
Warren: It seems to me that a local should get a discount on a
portion of the ticket.
COMMERCIAL CORE & LODGING COMMISSION MINUTES OF MAY 18, 1994
Jon: It is too late this year.
Tom: The Board, Jeffery Seeford and Tom Reinard of American
Express set the pricing. Based on this comment I will take that
back and there ought to be if there is an approved local address
there should be a consideration and I will definitely take that
back.
Warren: Can our group go on records that for next year we would
like a local discount.
Taylor: Do the people that run it feel the workers are sort of a
freebie?
Tom: They think it is the way you are getting paid to put in 18
hours for $400. It comes out to $22. a hour.
Warren: There are 650 locals that can go and work and are they
filled?
Tom: There are 43 committees and each has their own workers
returning each year. It is difficult to get on the committees.
Jack: Even ACRA members can't afford to go.
Tom: That is a great idea ACRa members should get a discount also.
Jon: Does the Board want to keep this informal or relay back to
American Express.
Warren: You are sold out yearly and possibly 300 seats could be
reserved for locals.
Jon: I would prefer to keep it informal.
Don: I would also and Tom can relay the message to the ACRA.
Jon: Businesses in town feel there should be a discounted tickets.
Tom: American Express I feel is very interested in this community
and every year they have done something for the Aspen Camp School
for the Deaf and this year they are doing a wine auction Friday
night which will benefit the Camp and the MAA. There will probably
be raised $100,000. I feel they will be sensitive to your
concerns.
Jon: We want them here but we do have this suggestion for those
that make decisions. We need to get go to one of your luncheons.
Tom: If you have information we can put it in their newsletter.
