HomeMy WebLinkAboutresolution.council.118-02 RESOLUTION NO. tl ~ ~~~2~ (Series of 2002) A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF ASPEN, COLORADO ENDORSING THE NEW MAROON CREEK BRIDGE AND ITS APPROACHES AS DESCRIBED IN THE PREFERRED ALTERNATIVE IN THE RECORD OF DECISION FOR THE STATE HIGHWAY 82 ENTRANCE TO ASPEN PROJECT, AND REQUESTING THAT THE COLORADO DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION (CDOT) EXPEDITE FUNDING FOR THIS COMPONENT OF THE PREFERRED ALTERNATIVE. WHEREAS, a Record of Decision was issued on August 3, 1998 approving a combination of highway improvements, a transit system and a transportation management program as the Preferred Alternative for the Entrance to Aspen Transportation Improvement Project; and WHEREAS, the historic Maroon Creek Bridge was built in 1888 as a railroad trestle, before being converted to automobile use in I929; and WHEREAS, the Maroon Creek Bridge is the oldest bridge still in use on Colorado's State Highway system; and WHEREAS, the Maroon Creek Bridge is functionally obsolete and structurally deficient for highway purposes, currently rating 41 out of 100 points on the CDOT sufficiency rating scale; and WHEREAS, the Record of Decision includes restoration of the 115-year-old Maroon Creek Bridge to its original width and building a new, safe, low-maintenance bridge designed for highway use to replace it; and WHEREAS, State Highway 82 at the Entrance to Aspen is the most congested two-lane highway in the State; and WHEREAS, the City of Aspen and Pitkin County have been worl~ing cooperatively with CDOT in completing Maroon Creek Road and Truscott Drive intersection improvements as initial phases of the Entrance to Aspen project; and WHEREAS, construction of the new Maroon Creek Bridge and its approaches is the most urgently-needed component of the Entrance to Aspen project. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ASPEN, COLORADO, THAT: 1. The 'City Council hereby reaffirms its support for the construction of the new Maroon Creek Bridge and its approaches between Buttermilk and the Maroon Creek/SH82 Roundabout as described in the Preferred Alternative for the Entrance to Akpen Project. 2. The City Council respectfully requests that CDOT expedite funding for these components of the Preferred Alternative, so that construction of this segment of the Entrance to Aspen project can proceed at the earliest possible date.
